Power Systems Application Engineer

Position Overview:

This position is primarily responsible for maintenance and support of the applications and associated databases utilized in modern energy management systems for the daily real time operation of a bulk power transmission system. Some supported applications and functions the Power Systems Application group (PSA) supports include, but are not limited to, power system modeling tools, state estimation, power flow, contingency analysis, automatic generation control and its backup system, outage scheduling, real time data sharing between operating companies, situational awareness displays and alarming. Immediate tasks will be comprised of transmission network analysis modeling for power flow purposes and the maintenance of current displays and calculations for PSA customers. PSA customers include the Power Coordination Center (PCC), Transmission Control Centers (TCC) and Fleet Operations. Other responsibilities will include supporting departmental projects or initiatives when the needs arise.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's and/or master's in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Educational focus or background in bulk power system operations analysis is preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the UNIX operating system, PERL, Python, C, and/or C++
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions
  • Ability and willingness to support team/department on 24x7 trouble calls
  • Strong interpersonal skills and can communicate effectively in both an oral and written manner
  • Working knowledge of OSI Monarch energy management software is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Siemen's Spectrum power grid management software is a plus
