Purpose: This position is responsible for providing leadership and strategic delivery in support of Southern Company Generation Fossil / Hydro plants, Fleet Strategy and Reliability, Southern Nuclear, Southern Power, Research and Development, Power Delivery, Technical and Shared Services organizations. The primary focus of this role is to support and enhance plant specific technology used by the generation fleet such as emissions monitoring and safety and health.

Responsibilities include production support and maintenance of existing business applications, as well as successful new solution development, including the analysis, purchase and implementation of appropriate vendor applications in support of existing monitoring and diagnostic centers and remote operation centers. The position will be responsible for building, maintaining and improving a data analytics platform to optimize maintenance and extend diagnostic capabilities.

This position leverages business, technical, and consulting resources from across the Technology Organization (TO) to ensure the timely delivery of effective business solutions. The scope of work includes: managing the life cycle of applications; providing project oversight; managing the staff who design, deliver, and maintain application products; staying abreast of emerging technologies; developing expertise in the business area and effectively applying the knowledge gained within TO; ensuring effective resource planning; managing and developing staff; effectively managing the budget for the function.

Directly reporting to this position will be 5 professional staff members with strong technical, project management, consulting, and communication skills. This position provides performance management and development of the people reporting to this position. This position also aids decisions related to process improvements and work assignments and ensures compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and SPC separation protocol.

Education/Experience:

  1. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related field required
  2. 5 or more years of experience in IT, with at least 2 years of experience leading multiple, small-medium sized and cross-functional teams
  3. Expertise with big data techniques, technologies and successful benefit realization of traditional reporting, data analytics capabilities and multi-faceted solutions and platforms delivered with an agile business use case driven mindset
  4. Working knowledge and understanding of existing and emerging information technologies
  5. Awareness of energy industry trends, opportunities, and challenges
  6. Demonstrated ability to understand technology issues and quantify the risks to ensure appropriate business decisions are made
  7. Has developed initiatives and delivered results on time and within budgets
  8. Has worked across functions in TO or in business
  9. Has developed effective working relationships with employees, peers, and management
  10. Demonstrated leadership and management skills including building a strong results-oriented team; performance management; budget management
  11. Demonstrated communication skills (oral/written) to all levels of employees/management

Job Responsibilities:

  • Drives and manages continuous improvement of technology delivery, maintenance, production support and reliability.
  • Understand the highly competitive generation business and support model required to meet business needs
  • Develop, drive and deliver on departmental strategic plans and goals
  • Proactively manage the life cycle of the applications. Includes managing new solution development and assessing/implementing options from vendors; efficiently supporting, maintaining, and retiring applications to ensure maximum value and reduced cost
  • Monitor solutions to maintain alignment with the business units
  • Ensure application solutions exceed expectations for functionality, quality, cost, and timely delivery
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships/partnerships with TO, business units and external vendors
  • Attract, develop, retain, and manage a highly effective, diverse workforce of technical employees highly skilled in multiple disciplines whose purpose is to design, develop, and successfully implement on time and within budget, applications and other products that deliver business value and exceed expectations
  • Manage the organization as a business with emphasis on efficient budget planning, budget variance management, strong financial performance and effective resource planning
  • Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and established practices and procedures
