Brief Job Overview/Summary
The Visual Arts Program (Art Department) at Stockton University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Art History beginning September 2026. Ph.D. (or Ph.D. by September 2026) is required, with college-level teaching experience and publications record. Academic experience with culturally diverse populations is desired.
Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Preference is given to candidates whose teaching and scholarship emphasizes modern or contemporary periods of the 20th and 21st centuries in a global, diverse context.
- Teach six four-credit courses per academic year in the Visual Arts program, as described below. A course release in the first semester of service is likely
- Offer courses in area of specialization, two-semester art history survey, and other courses as needed, including senior project for art history majors, elective courses for visual arts majors, and courses for the University’s General Studies curriculum
- Maintain an active practice of scholarship and publication in the field of art history and directly related disciplines
- Serve as chair of the University Art Gallery Committee and as liaison to the Gallery Exhibitions Coordinator
- Support students as a preceptor (advisor), mentor, and by maintaining office hours
- Contribute to the function and educational objectives of the program and school, providing service to the program, university, and local or national communities
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

- Ability to teach courses with an emphasis on art in a global, diverse context
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in art history. Doctoral degree must be conferred prior to the start of contract
- College-level teaching experience
- Record of publications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Specialization in modern or contemporary art history
- Interest in incorporating issues of race and gender in appropriate courses
- Academic experience with culturally diverse populations
- Experience working collaboratively with faculty in other disciplines
