In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $125,000. New York University Libraries is seeking a tenure-track faculty librarian to support the needs of data-intensive research and teaching across a wide range of social sciences, humanities, and sciences disciplines at NYU. This individual works as part of our Data Services department to grow and sustain a dynamic program that supports researchers across the full data lifecycle, including data finding and access, data literacy training and consultation, and data collections management and licensing. This is an open-rank position and candidates will be appointed to a rank in accordance with experience and education.
The Data Reference & Collections Librarian plays a key role in connecting university researchers with data sources, building rich data collections at NYU Libraries, and contributing to wider efforts to bring ethical and social justice concerns to data access, collection development, and our role in the research lifecycle. Working in close collaboration with other subject-, software-, and curation specialists, the librarian in this position will:
Select, acquire, and manage quantitative, geospatial, text-based, qualitative, and other types of data assets in order to support campus research, scholarship, and FAIR principles for data access.
Raise awareness of our resources among faculty and students through outreach activities, usage tracking for items in our institutional repository, and partnerships with other providers.
Build knowledge about the shifting landscape of institutional repositories and various data sources at the national and international levels.
Develop and maintain awareness of ongoing debates about data collecting and distribution approaches oriented around ethical and restorative justice concerns, open access availability of funded research, data-centered innovations in the field, and inclusive governance standards (e.g. CARE).
Collaborate with colleagues in Data Services to deliver data-focused instruction, reference, and consultations, including a growing portfolio of instruction focused on data literacy, data use, and data ethics.
Depending upon the background of the candidate, this person may also serve as liaison librarian to one or more programs or departments at the University, selecting materials and providing services to support the research and teaching of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in said areas.
This position reports to the Head of Data Services and works closely with colleagues across the Research & Research Services subdivision as well as partners in Collections & Content Strategy, Scholarly Communications & Information Policy, Digital Scholarship Services, and the Digital Library Technology Services group.
Faculty Librarians are also expected to pursue their own active research agendas, and contribute to building new knowledge in their chosen areas. Librarians have wide latitude in determining their research agendas, and the Data Reference & Collections Librarian would be well positioned to make substantive contributions to research in a number of areas, including, but not limited to, research services provision, data publication and the research lifecycle, multiple literacies within Libraries service provision, innovations in data discovery, social justice and data collection, the landscape of institutional repositories, or a field specific to their disciplinary background.
Minimum one graduate degree (master’s level or higher) for consideration. A second graduate degree will be required for tenure review. One of the two graduate degrees must be an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent.
An understanding of how researchers use data in a variety of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
Commitment to service and collection building that brings a critical and anti-racist lens to the interrogation and use of data and the larger data ecosystem.
Knowledge of public and proprietary resources for data, and a familiarity with many of the search and discovery tools used to find those assets.
Familiarity with the instructional and service-oriented core of providing reference and outreach, particularly within a critical pedagogical framework.
Comfort with software used for statistical, geospatial, qualitative, and/or text analysis.
Ability to work effectively with users and colleagues in a collaborative environment.
Experience acquiring or licensing data resources for a library collection.
Experience working across organizational boundaries and managing collaborators to move projects forward.
Disciplinary background focused on conducting data-oriented research.

The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Full Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $100,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Associate Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $90,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Assistant Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $84,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Library Associate in the academic year 2022-2023 is $80,000.
