The Role
City & State is seeking an editor with a passion for New York
City and state politics who can direct our coverage with original,
insightful pitches and thoughtful mentorship of our stellar
reporting team. The editor will help our writers produce
well-researched, analytical news stories – written in a clear and
punchy style – as well as in-depth magazine stories. You will edit
stories, lead pitch discussions, work closely with and mentor
reporters, and occasionally write your own analyses.
This is a paid, full-time position. City & State is a
remote-first work company, which does not require you to report in
person. We do encourage staff to take advantage of our new office
in Lower Manhattan.
Responsibilities
- Assign and edit web stories for City & State New York
- Work closely with and mentor reporters
- Review website traffic with City & State’s digital to
strategize deployment of stories - Lead op-ed intake and evaluation, and edit the op-eds
- Maintain relationships with freelance reporters
- Work with other editors to fill morning, evening and weekend
newsletter shifts as needed
Qualifications
- 3+ years of editing experience, preferably on politics
- Strong knowledge of New York City and state politics
- Strong ability to evaluate pitches, have an ear for a
compelling story - SEO-friendly headline writing experience

The compensation range for this role is $45,000 to $60,000 per
year.
