Support and develop microbial solutions for the animal productivity product lines for application in the bovine species. The research will focus on applying microbiological and molecular genetic techniques to isolate and characterize pathogenic bacteria from feed, environmental and fecal samples from ruminant production systems and developing probiotic products to promote intestinal health and improved performance as part of the Microbial TerroirTM platform. In addition, this role will also be responsible for new product development projects outside of the existing Microbial Terroir platform, addressing environmental challenges and silage inoculant solutions for the ruminant market.

Responsibilities:

• Isolate and characterize bacterial isolates using molecular genetic techniques and test for sensitivity using bacteriocin inhibition assays to identify potential probiotic microorganisms
• Validate the functional activity of the microorganisms through in vitro models
• Prepare reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
• Generating an experimental design using internal data from past experiments and data published in peer reviewed literature to optimize future and existing product differentiation.
• Lead team in execution of in vitro silage inoculant experiments, analyze and interpret pH, volatile fatty acids by HPLC analysis and microbial results, summarize in a report to be presented to the silage project team in a timely manner.
• Monitor microbial populations from on farm demonstrations to control environmental bacteria, interpret, summarize results in PowerPoint presentations and/or research reports in a timely manner.
• Maintain inter- and intradepartmental work-flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
