Join the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center and become part of a team building the next
generation of online large scale assessments of student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading.

The TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center is home to two major international research programs that monitor student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading. TIMSS (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is conducted on a four-year cycle and measures mathematics and science achievement at fourth and eighth grades in more than 70 countries. PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) assesses fourth grade student achievement in reading in more than 60 countries on a five year cycle. TIMSS and PIRLS are in the process of evolving from paper and pencil to digital assessments.

The Senior Software Developer will assist in developing the TIMSS and PIRLS digital assessments. This individual will contribute substantially to the technical development of the assessment software and be skilled in translating vector-based mockups into accessibility-compatible code that interfaces with existing integrated technical systems in Hamburg, Germany. Reporting to the Director of UX & Software Development, the candidate will work directly with the eAssessment Department, Center Directors, and TIMSS and PIRLS research staff, project partners in Hamburg, Germany, and external vendors.

  • BS/BA in Computer Science or IT preferred
  • 5+ years of working experience in software development
  • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with the team
  • Excellent understanding of objectoriented software development and design (e.g., ASP.NET
  • Good knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, AngularJS, HTML5, and Bootstrap
  • Experience with hybrid mobile apps (iOS/Android), C#, EntityFramework, RDBMS (MS SQL Server preferred), .NET Framework 4.x, Visual Studio 2013 or higher, IIS, etc.
  • Project planning, including analysis and review of requirements as well as reporting and monitoring
  • Provide consultancy and support to teams regarding all architecture and development
  • Develop and improve internal processes (e.g. Agile approaches)

Frequent international travel may be required
