Department of Mathematics

It is an exciting time to do mathematics. Progress in mathematics has been occurring at a very rapid rate, and mathematical ideas and discoveries play an essential enabling role in many aspects of modern life, from the internet to finance to medicine and many more. The Department of Mathematics at Illinois won the 2017 Exemplary Program Award from the American Mathematical Society (AMS), a nationwide honor that recognizes the department for its effective innovations helping students succeed at all levels.

We offer majors in Mathematics and Actuarial Science. The Mathematics Major is an outstanding preparation for many careers and graduate programs. Our Actuarial Science Program has been designated a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries.

Mathematical research is an outstanding way to explore mathematics and to improve your collaboration and communication skills. The Illinois Geometry Lab provides many opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in mathematical research.

Consider graduate study in mathematics. Our graduate program produces almost 2% of the mathematics PhDs in the United States, and our graduates go on to careers in academia, industry, and government labs. We support an active chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), and graduate students have the opportunity to explore multiple career paths through an innovative program of internships in science and industry.

Our faculty conduct research across a wide range of modern mathematics and we have a very active schedule of seminars and colloquia. Three of our faculty were invited to speak at the International Congresses of Mathematicians in both 2014 and 2018, and many of our faculty have won college and campus teaching awards and research awards.
