Come build the future as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon, where you will be inspired working along best-in-class inventors and innovators! You will have the opportunity to create meaningful experiences that deliver on the ever-evolving needs of our customers, and your work will impact millions of people around the world.
As an Amazon Software Development Engineer, you will solve unique and complex problems at a rapid pace, utilizing the latest technologies to create solutions that are highly scalable. You will find that there is an unlimited number of opportunities within Amazon, where developing your career across a wide range of teams is highly supported. We are committed to making your work experience as enjoyable as the experiences you’ll be creating for our customers.
Team Overview
We envision a future where latency-sensitive workloads operate in the region closest to our customers, and latency-insensitive workloads operate in the least expensive region that meets regulatory requirements. In this future, most services are agnostic of where their business logic and data reside, and only provide constraints and scaling signals to a central placement system solving for the Amazon-wide optimal solution balancing capacity availability signals from AWS, the optimal customer experience, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency. With greater flexibility, peak events that require scaling beyond the available capacity of a single region can be served simultaneously from multiple regions, reducing our peak-to-mean spread and reducing CAPEX.
To accomplish this, we need to intentionally iterate on architectures that abstract networking and infrastructure management (e.g., moving to higher-level abstractions), reduce the number of architectural patterns SDO teams employ to build their services, improve the abstraction of telemetry and observability capabilities, and centralize the optimization of undifferentiated decisions currently made imperfectly due to distributed ownership (e.g., placement of capacity, timeout management, data migrations).
We begin by building core components that enable and reduce the effort of our most urgent cross-region moves, while guiding individual teams to adopt solutions and foundational systems that meet them at their current architectural abstraction and maturity (e.g., provide solutions for each of Lambda, managed runtimes, and JVM-on-EC2/ECS). We then intentionally build on the learnings from cross-region migrations into these central solutions and patterns, evolving SDO services with minimum builder toil (e.g., ship features via merge-from-live).
Region Flexibility aims to make it easy to serve existing customer traffic across various organizations in Amazon from new AWS regions.
The vision is that services and data are automatically placed in the region(s) and AZ(s) they’re needed without builder effort or awareness, and guardrails ensure all new services stay region flexible from creation.
Role Overview
Depending on your experience, interests and business needs, you will own the back-end or full stack design and development of product features, building scale, efficiency, and differentiated customer experiences. We’re looking for software engineers passionate about building software solutions end-to-end, have strong software development experience delivering at scale solutions, and systems design skills.
You should have a demonstrated ability delivering within a DevOps delivery model from scoping requirements, requirement analysis, design, development, test, CI/CD, security implementation, and operational excellence with the ability to work cross-functionally with Product Managers, business stakeholders and other tech teams through the actual launch of the project. You should also have experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.
