The Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) organization is seeking a Electrical Safety Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for partnering with Amazon Worldwide Design Engineering teams to ensure new equipment and modifications to existing equipment installed in operational Amazon buildings comply with all applicable codes, regulations and harmonized standards. You will also partner with various engineering, design and operations teams including, Operations Engineering, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Business Operations Leaders, Field WHS teams, and other key stakeholders. In addition, you will be required to lead risk assessments, assist in the development and review of equipment designs and provide guidance on requirements on controls and devices. This role will serve as a key technical leader within WHS, specializing in the management of thermal event risks associated with electrical equipment and systems, and lithium battery systems. .
This position requires travel 25-50% of the time.
Key job responsibilities
- Complete risk evaluations in accordance with ISO12100 and ANSI B11 practices
- Interpret and apply regulations, codes, bylaws, and all relevant standards
- Advise partner engineering organizations and operations teams on regulations, regulatory compliance concerns, and good engineering practices relating to equipment design
- Work with various teams to review and approve designs of new equipment and modifications to existing equipment
- Must display improvement projects
- Maintain all regulatory compliance documentation to ensure accurate and up to date adherence to standards
- Managing projects that require certifications that comply with local, national and international regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of equipment certification requirements (CE, UL, etc.) and experience working with NRTLs
- Integration of control systems into the design of new and existing equipment
- Work with WHS safety teams, technical engineering teams and suppliers to specify safety or other risk-related requirements for projects across multiple regions
- Provide technical leadership in assessing and mitigating thermal risks related to electrically powered equipment including wired and battery supply types.
- Develop and implement repeatable and standardized processes for identifying, assessing, and managing thermal event risks.
Perform hazard analysis, risk assessments, and other thermal event risk evaluations.
- Create tools and protocols aligned with OSHA, ISO, and other international standards and ensure Amazon equipment meets industry standards including but not limited to UL 2054, UL 1642, UL 1973, UL 1989, UL 2580, IEC 62133, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, UL 891, UL 2703, UL 790, UL 1741, UL 1449, UL 467 and equivalent codes & standards.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to drive solutions that reduce risks from overheating, lithium battery fires and damaged electrical equipment.
- Define program requirements and leverage data-driven metrics to prioritize and drive safety improvements.
- Own projects and programs related to thermal risks.
- Lead and participate in incident investigations related to thermal events and provide guidance on corrective actions and prevention strategies.
- Train, mentor, and coach internal stakeholders on thermal risk management, electrical thermal risks, lithium battery hazards, and best practices.

This role requires an effective communicator and someone to send clear, concise and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing and possess excellent program management skills. You need to be knowledgeable in control systems, environmental and ergonomic design principles. You must also have applied understanding of regional and international regulations, codes and standards.
