The Opportunity
This position works out of our Long Grove, IL location in the Transfusion Medicine, Diagnostics Division. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
The Veterinarian will be expected to provide expertise and oversight of all aspects of animal care and use at Abbott Lake County animal facilities.
What You’ll Work On
Veterinary Medical Care:
Monitoring and conducting evaluations of animal health.
Managing disease surveillance and preventative medicine programs.
Knowledge of the nature, cause, and development of diseases and the changes caused by disease.
Requires knowledge of the ethical treatment of animal subjects.
Animal Welfare Oversight:
Serve as Attending Veterinarian and voting member of the IACUC and engaged in all Committee responsibilities such as protocol review, inspections, policy development, and post approval monitoring.
Support corporate Animal Welfare committees.
Participation in USDA inspections and AAALAC site visits.
Proactively monitor changes in animal welfare regulations and participate in development and ongoing updates to internal veterinary policies for humane animal care and use.
Complete relevant continuing education to stay abreast with changes.
Develop and execute species appropriate training for animal care and research staff.
Interface and advise Principal Investigators, the IACUC, and animal care staff to ensure the program is within regulatory requirements for the research activities.
Assist with new animal model development and oversight of special procedures.
Advise on literature search for alternatives.
Animal Facility Supervision:
Manage up to 5 staff members.
Budget and long-term capital planning.
Equipment and physical plant oversight.
Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems, Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
Required Qualifications
Veterinary Doctorate Degree
Minimum 3 years experience in monitoring and conducting evaluations of animal health.
Knowledge of the nature, cause, and development of diseases and the changes caused by disease.
Requires knowledge of the ethical treatment of animal subjects.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
Familiarity with GLP and GMP regulations.
USDA accredited.
ACLAM certification or eligible.
Knowledge of USDA Animal Welfare Regulations.
Experience in serving on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Knowledge of AAALAC International standards; the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching.
Practical understanding of local, state, and federal policies regulating the use of animals in research, testing and production.
Supervisory experience is a plus.

$97,300.00 – $194,700.00
