The Amazon's eXperiences & Upskilling (AXU) organization is looking for a Principal Accessibility Specialist to support the AXU team in their work to ensure that the daily experiences of Amazonians and the communities Amazon serves are Born Accessible.
You will champion the needs of people with disabilities by defining and executing the audience strategy, content approach, and engagement model that enables all of AXU to embed accessibility in their work — reaching software development engineers, program managers, product managers, content creators, experience designers, and learning designers as distinct communities with different engagement needs.
This role works alongside an Accessibility Director who owns governance, policy, and organizational accountability. You will own the how and who — determining which audiences need what level of enablement, in what format, and in what sequence to drive sustainable accessibility adoption across the organization.
This is an individual contributor role requiring complete independence. You will define best practices, build engagement strategies where none exist, and operate in ambiguity to drive accessibility adoption across multiple technical communities within AXU.
Key job responsibilities
Audience Strategy and Content Creation
- Define accessibility enablement strategy across AXU — determining which communities need what guidance, format, and priority
- Plan and deliver complex accessibility content across multiple audiences and skill levels
- Establish reusable content standards and best practices across AXU teams
- Create exemplary content: playbooks, training modules, reference architectures, remediation guides, and templates
- Lead content creation where long-term approach is ambiguous
Multi-Community Engagement and Advocacy
- Serve as the face of accessibility across AXU for all teams regardless of technical depth
- Design distinct engagement models for different communities (code reviews, consultations, training, embedded practice)
- Champion the needs of people with disabilities — surfacing barriers and translating lived experience into requirements
- Collaborate with DLS/Pa11y, Wa11y, and existing teams to integrate standards and co-develop solutions
- Facilitate user testing with employees with disabilities
Technical Expertise and Advisory
- Serve as accessibility SME spanning web, mobile, document, event, and program accessibility
- Conduct evaluations enabling teams to self-serve resolution
- Advise on assistive technology interoperability and accessible architecture
- Make trade-off recommendations when accessibility competes with delivery constraints
Force Multiplication and Capability Building
- Build organizational capability at scale
- Design scalable mechanisms
- Recruit, mentor, and grow the accessibility community
About the team
The mission of Amazon Experiences and Upskilling (AXU) is to help customers, employees, and communities grow, thrive, and connect with Amazon. Across Amazon, every business builds these experiences, from selling and delivering to upskilling and career pathways.
AXU works across all of them to connect the dots so people can discover every path available to them, and ensure those paths reach everyone. We do this through technology: AZA and Quick for employees, A to Z for Everyone and Alexa+ for customers, employees, and communities.
