Company Description
Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy employee, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.
We believe exceptional companies are built by exceptional teams, and we're intentional about it. That means hiring great people, setting them up for success from day one, and giving them real reasons to grow their careers here. We invest in development that goes beyond promotions, and we foster the trust and relationships that help people do their best work together.
What’s the role?
We're looking for a Staff Product Designer to own Conversations and Co-Creation at Etsy — one of the most strategically distinct bets in our product portfolio. Right now, messaging on Etsy is largely reactive: most buyers have never sent a message, and the majority of convos are post-purchase help threads. But co-creation is already happening at scale — over 1.2 million conversations led to a purchase in just 16 weeks, at nearly 3x our average order value — and the experience hasn't caught up. You'll design the future of how buyers and makers collaborate to bring custom things to life.
Convos & Co-Creation is part of the Consider & Purchase design team within BuyerX. Consider & Purchase focuses on Listings, Landings, Post-Purchase, and Convos & Co-Creation.
The Buyer X Team is focused on driving excellence and connection in the customer experience. We believe in the need to maintain a rigorous focus on craft and consistency in order to bring our strategy and mission to life. In this role, you will be defining and designing new experiences and improving on existing ones in close collaboration with cross-functional product partners in engineering, research, analytics, marketing and product management.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Manager of Product Design.
What’s this team like at Etsy?
Product designers at Etsy work in a squad alongside a product manager, 4-6 engineers, a researcher and a data analyst. Together they drive their own part of the Etsy customer experience by delivering solutions to problems and getting feedback directly from customers.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Designing polished, interactive prototypes to bring your team’s roadmap to life
Launching experiments and evaluating how they perform and how to iterate
Sharing your work with peers and leadership to collect feedback and iterate
Taking part in weekly design critiques, workshops, and squad meetings
Thinking and writing about your process and documenting your decisions
Collaborating with engineering to build your design to spec before launch
Collecting feedback through both research and experimentation to refine and iterate on your designs
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
7+ years of professional experience working in product design
Ability to develop work that represents strong understanding of design fundamentals (visual hierarchy, interaction design, application of brand and system)
Experience designing native apps (iOS and Android) and familiarity with platform specific interaction patterns
You create superior and systematically maintained designs that set the bar for execution of visual design standards at Etsy.
Effective articulation of ideas and design solutions
Self-directed leadership with the ability to guide peers and drive cross-functional impact
Share feedback with understanding and clarity, and easily translate feedback you receive into your work
Your ideas improve our processes and products and create clarity through ambiguity
Translation of quantitative & qualitative insights into design decisions
Contribution to our culture: motivation, optimism, quality, integrity
