We are seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager to own engineering excellence across the North American Stores (NAS) organization, the teams behind Amazon's shopping and returns experience. NAS is accountable for a widening set of cross-cutting mandates that central teams set, spanning infrastructure cost, operational resilience, security remediation, how fast and safely we ship, and how we protect customer data. These arrive in-year, on the same teams and the same capacity, and this role is how NAS stays ahead of all of them at once. You will stand up and run a new program that holds the organization to a single high bar across five domains and gives leadership one honest read on the whole surface.
You will operate in an ambiguous, high-visibility space that demands deep technical judgment and the ability to build consensus without direct authority. Working with our most senior engineers, you will set the bar for each domain, decompose a sprawling excellence surface into a small set of measurable goals, and drive teams across every organization in NAS to meet them. You will be NAS's single point of contact to the central organizations that set the work, carrying our position and tradeoffs back to them so we shape the mandates rather than only absorb them, and negotiating scope and timelines when a new goal lands mid-cycle.
This role changes how NAS operates, from reacting to each new mandate cold to running from a standing state of readiness, through a model where every organization has one point of contact, each domain has a technical owner, and an automated scorecard surfaces risk before it becomes a miss. You will invent the mechanisms that make excellence a leadership expectation rather than a reporting tax, and you will own the monthly review where the leaders who run the teams engage directly on tradeoffs and path to green.
Key job responsibilities
Program Strategy and Scorecard Ownership - Define and run the end-to-end engineering excellence program across five domains: infrastructure efficiency, operational excellence, cross-cutting mandates, builder enablement, and privacy. Own a single flagship goal per domain and the one scorecard that reports all five to NAS leadership, so the organization has one honest read on the whole surface rather than five disconnected ones.
Central-Team Liaison and Mandate Negotiation - Be NAS's single point of contact to the central organizations that set the work, including SDO, the S-Team, Infosec, and Amazon Privacy Services. Carry NAS's position and tradeoffs back to them, negotiate scope and timelines when a mandate arrives in-year, and represent NAS in central roadmaps so the organization shapes the requirements rather than only receiving them.
Cross-Organizational Leadership and Influence - Drive the domain goals to closure across every organization in NAS, in teams you do not own and without direct authority. Responsible for leading a team of domain owners who are themselves senior technical program managers and engineers, and hold senior managers and their teams to the bar, running an operating model where each domain has a technical owner and each organization supplies a point of contact so one program covers the full surface.
Mechanism Invention and Simplification - Decompose an ambiguous, sprawling excellence surface into a small set of measurable bars, and invent the mechanisms that move them. Partner with Principal and Senior Principal Engineers to set each bar at the right altitude, and retire the mechanisms that add process without moving the outcome.
Review Cadence and Executive Communication - Own the in-person monthly review that NAS technical leaders are required to attend, where leaders engage directly on at-risk organizations and path to green. Produce the monthly flash to leadership covering status, risks, and decisions across all five domains, translating a wide surface into the few things leaders need to act on.
A day in the life
Your day spans the five domains NAS is measured on and the leaders who own them. You start with the program scorecard, looking for the organizations trending off their bar, then pull the domain owners and each org's point of contact together to work root cause and path to green. You meet with a central program team to negotiate the scope or timeline of a mandate that landed mid-cycle, and you carry that back to NAS leaders so no team absorbs it cold. You partner with Principal and Senior Principal Engineers to set or sharpen a domain bar, and with technical leaders across the organization to sequence the work against their capacity. You close by preparing the monthly flash that gives leadership one honest read across all five domains, and by running the in-person review where the leaders who own the teams engage directly on the tradeoffs and decisions in front of them.
