Are you passionate about keeping critical infrastructure running at massive scale? As a Data Center Controls Engineer on the global controls team, you will troubleshoot complex issues, manage projects, and maintain the building management system (BMS) and electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) that govern the mechanical and electrical systems powering Amazon data centers. You will develop new processes and standards while finding creative ways to improve controls across a rich ecosystem of generators, uninterruptible power supplies, switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and air handling units. These components interact through open and proprietary communications protocols, and you will be at the center of ensuring they operate reliably and efficiently.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, configure, validate, commission, and maintain BMS and EPMS systems while training internal stakeholders on their operation and best practices.
- Plan and execute BMS and EPMS improvement projects end-to-end, defining scope, schedule, budget, and coordinating with partner teams and vendors to deliver on time.
- Troubleshoot high-complexity controls issues, review and iterate on sequences of operation, and develop or modify controls logic programming and graphical user interfaces.
- Serve as a technical escalation point for in-service data centers, participating in the global on-call rotation and guiding less experienced engineers through risk mitigation during emergent situations.
- Develop risk assessments and operational dashboards, review quarterly maintenance results, and drive corrective actions to continuously improve equipment reliability.
A day in the life
Your morning may start with a review of overnight BMS alerts and coordination with the on-call team to prioritize open items. From there, you could be on-site at a data center validating a controls sequence change alongside a vendor, then shifting to a project planning session where you scope an EPMS upgrade with partner engineering teams. You will regularly move between hands-on technical work and collaborative discussions with operations, commissioning, and design teams, balancing immediate troubleshooting needs with longer-term improvement projects.
