Job Description
Maintain as well as periodically review and update ECMO program polices, standards and quality measures in collaboration with the program medical director and other key stakeholders. Purchase and manage all equipment and inventory required for care of a patient on ECMO. Coordinate and facilitate ECMO training for newly recruited ECMO Specialists in accordance with ELSO guidelines. This includes ongoing continuing education for ECMO Specialists. Provide ECMO education for clinicians throughout the medical center including, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, faculty and resident physicians, physician assistants, as well as perfusionists. Provide clinical expertise and supervision while a patient is on ECMO. This will include collaboration and discussion with ECMO physicians as well as the patients primary care team, direct supervision of ECMO specialists at the bedside, as well as indirect supervision and support on an on call basis. Maintain 24 hour accountability over the ECMO program. Maintain relationships with various clinical services that support the ECMO program including: pediatric critical care, adult critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, adult and pediatric general surgery, adult and pediatric cardiology, as well as neonatology. Coordinate monthly ECMO specialist and ECMO initiation coverage schedules among a multidisciplinary team of ECMO specialists. Leads and participates in process improvement for the program and for the quality of clinical outcomes. Maintain database of ECMO patients, outcomes, and complications and submit to ELSO as required. Develop and manage all aspects of material and human resources within budget. Transcribe and submit ECMO patient billing including appropriate supply and procedural CDM codes. Follow emerging trends in the field of Extracorporeal Life Support by reading published peer reviewed journal articles as well as attendance at regional or national ECMO conferences. Additional Responsibilities: Provides direct patient care as needed. This can include, performing the role of ECMO specialist, or setting up and initiating ECMO support as well as providing urgent or emergent circuit component change-out on an on call basis.
