Telecom Analyst (Long-Haul Fiber)
JOB SUMMARY:
This position works closely with the Field Operations (FO) Supervisors, Electricians/Technicians, Power Delivery, Contractors, and fiber asset owners. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, Company Owned and Maintained (COAM) and Joint-Venture Party (JVP) Long-Haul fiber projects and operational support activities.
The incumbent will be responsible for fiber optic 2 nd level operational and maintenance support to field technicians in areas related to advanced troubleshooting, coordination of major repairs, documentation, and the facilitation of relevant training.
The incumbent will prioritize their organization’s daily project workload with minimal oversight while effectively interfacing with multiple parties, FO Electricians/Technicians, Project Managers, Power Delivery Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, support groups, external vendors, business partners, and others as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )
Education & Experience:
- A two-year degree in electronics technology and five years or more equivalent experience in the telecommunications field is required
- Five to seven years of experience in a similar role or experience in Telecommunications Electrician/Field Operations Technician roles are preferred.
- A proven track record in delivering problem resolutions and project implementations.
- Experience with fusion, ribbon, and mechanical splicing of various fiber optic cable types.
- Experience with fiber optic cable prep, installation, and maintenance methodologies for single-mode and multi-mode fiber cables and assemblies.
- Experience installing, maintaining, and supporting fiber-optic termination panels and splice enclosure assemblies.
- Experience with fiber optic testing and troubleshooting using Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), Power Meters, Light Sources, Fiber Scopes, etc.
- Experience with Outside Plant (OSP) field engineering, documentation, GIS mapping programs, fiber emulation software and labeling standards.
Technical & Leadership Competencies:
- Working knowledge of fiber optics (optronics and cables) and ancillary systems (DC/AC power systems, surge protection, grounding, physical facilities, etc.).
- Working knowledge of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) safety, installation, maintenance, and restoration methodologies. Experience working with and providing oversight for company and contracted Power Delivery crews providing powerline and support.
- Solid technical understanding of Southern Company’s telecommunications network, data network, and other major systems that utilize the company’s telecommunications infrastructure.
- Ability to engineer fiber network moves, adds, and changes from an FO perspective.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate project tasks for employees, vendors, contractors, customers, and partners while maintaining project commitments.
- Ability to lead a team, coordinating various workgroups to drive complex problem resolution in a timely and efficient manner.
- Achieves business, organization, and departmental goals and strategies while ensuring compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley rules and regulations.
