Reliability Engineer, Senior – Power Delivery Systems and Standards

Work Location: Based in Metro Atlanta, travel required within state of Georgia

JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing technical evaluations of distributed energy resources (DER) that will interconnect with the Electric Power Distribution system. These evaluations will involve both exporting and non-exporting generation sites, such as renewables and standby generation. To maintain the safe and reliable operation of our system, this position will be responsible for ensuring upstream protection schemes are optimized and all distributed generation (DG) interconnections comply with Southern Company requirements. In addition to reviewing and approving customer DG applications & designs, this position will confirm operational conformance by performing witness testing of DER relays & control schemes.
The successful candidate will also assist with statewide reliability initiatives such as system improvement projects, asset management projects, and event analysis as needed. Effective communication skills are essential as this position is required to work with external customers, contractors and various internal organizations, such as local operating personnel, Renewables, Distribution Automation, Distribution Planning, Metering, Sales and Customer Service. This position will also be expected to assist with storm restoration efforts as needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performing technical evaluations of distributed generation applications for non-exporting and exporting sites
- Performing witness testing of Open Transition Transfer (OTT), Closed Transition Transfer (CTT) & intertie protection relay schemes to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the Electric Power Distribution system
- Enforcing and advising on Southern Company DER Interconnection Policy requirements
- Assisting Reliability Engineering colleagues and local operating personnel with technical analysis to develop optimized & cost-effective solutions
- Assisting with statewide reliability initiatives; such as system improvement and asset management projects
- Providing support for storm restoration efforts as needed
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirement (The following education or license is required)
- ABET accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical is required -or- Engineering Technology degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical with Professional Engineer (PE) License is required
- Advanced degree is a plus
- Professional Engineer License is preferred
Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years operations experience in Electric Power Distribution &/or Electric Power Transmission is required; 5 or more years is preferred
- Distribution Reliability, Distribution Automation, Power Quality &/or Distribution Planning experience is highly preferred
- Protection & Controls (P&C) Field Services, P&C Applications and distributed generation interconnection witness testing experience is highly preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proven knowledge of Electric Power Distribution systems, policies and procedures
- Demonstrated technical competency and understanding of customer service needs
- Experience using Microsoft Office, CYME and SEL SynchroWAVE software is preferred
- Knowledge of GPC Section 0 safety rules, operating procedures, policies, guidelines, and bulletins is a plus
- Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes
- Excellent analytical and technical problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively through written reports, well organized presentations, and oral discussions
- Capable of having constructive dialogue with internal & external customers
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize conflicting demands
- Candidate must currently hold a valid Driver’s License

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Travel within state of Georgia required, dependent upon testing site locations
- Work hours must be flexible to accommodate multiple projects, customer requests, and inclement weather
- Must be available to work SERP operations when needed.
