Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
The Propulsion Group is seeking a Test Engineer to support the development and continued improvement of propulsion flight hardware and its testing. As part of the Propulsion Development Test Team, you will support the design, optimization, and execution of electric propulsion testing for a variety of different propulsion systems and subsystems, including PCBA's, feed systems, thrusters, cathodes, tanks, and integrated propulsion systems.
You will work with hardware design owners and subject matter experts to develop and execute testing of hardware in order to inform design updates and failure investigations. This will include test procedure definition, software development, test execution, and data analysis. You will also develop new test capabilities as well as optimize existing systems for both production and development testing by building and optimizing new and existing test systems and techniques.
You will also contribute to finding solutions to challenging problems by investigating root causes for hardware failures and assist in the disposition of production and flight non-conformances through investigation testing and data analysis. Additionally, you will utilize the growing amount of development and production data to inform methods of accelerating production acceptance testing without reducing hardware screening.
Key job responsibilities
• Perform development testing of a variety of electric propulsion systems and subsystems in order to inform design updates and root cause investigations
• Design and implement updates to development test hardware and software to improve development test capabilities
• Analyze data from both production and development tests to inform hardware performance trends, requirements, and methods of accelerating production acceptance testing without reducing hardware screening.
• Perform root cause investigations to understand hardware and test failures and assist in the disposition of production and flight hardware non-conformances.
• Work with other engineers to refine test requirements and the methodologies to test against those requirements
A day in the life
The Propulsion Development Test Engineer will ensure that a high bar for propulsion flight hardware quality and performance is maintained by continually testing existing hardware and new designs to inform improvements. They will work closely with other teams within the Propulsion Group such as the design, subject matter expert, production test, and manufacturing teams in order to support development test request and to maintain deep knowledge of their owned systems.
A successful candidate thrives in a fast paced, start-up like environment and is able to apply their technical expertise and commitment to quality to positively impact organization goals. To be successful they will need to be highly motivated and detail oriented while showing the highest standards of execution.
About the team
The Kuiper Propulsion Team is responsible for the design and development of the propulsion system which provides maneuvering capability to the spacecraft. The Propulsion Team is made up of a variety of sub-teams which are responsible for various aspects of the development process, such as mechanical design, systems engineering, subject matter experts, manufacturing, and test. This integrated team structure allows direct communication and rapid process feedback while also promoting close collaboration across the team.
