Job Title: Fire Safety Analysis Engineer
JOB SUMMARY
This position will be in the SNC Corporate Office and will report to the Fire Safety Analysis (FSA) Manager in the Risk Informed Engineering (RIE) department. This engineer is responsible for performing Fire Probabilistic Risk Analyses (FPRA) and Safe Shutdown (SSD) engineering evaluations in support of Southern Nuclear Company (SNC) nuclear generating plants. The RIE department is focused on being the industry leader in risk-informed decision-making by developing, maintaining, and applying state-of-the-art tools and models. The Fire Safety Analysis Engineer's work includes, but is not limited to, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting technical inputs, demonstrating regulatory compliance, and performing and managing tasks and projects as part of a team of FSA and RIE engineers. This position requires an individual to be a self-starter, organized, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and to have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The person needs to be flexible, demonstrate initiative, and work well in a high-pressure, fast-paced, and deadline-oriented environment.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties of the FSA Engineer include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for performing various FPRA and SSD risk-related engineering evaluations.
- Review PWR and BWR design changes for impacts to the FPRA, SSD, Non-Power Operation (NPO), and Nuclear Safety Capability Assessment (NSCA) models. Evaluate the magnitude of impacts and identify which parts of the FPRA models need updated.
- Support FPRA PWR and BWR model updates.
- Update the SSD, NPO, and NSCA models periodically.
- Complete various types of circuit analyses, specific to fire impacts on various types of component control circuits.
- Review of various FPRA, SSD, NPO, and NSCA vendor products for technical accuracy. Provide comments and maintain oversight of vendor comment resolution.
- Interpreting and ensuring compliance with risk informed regulatory requirements, policies and standards.
- Writing and reviewing technical reports.
- Assisting with audits and inspections including support of significance determination program and emergency request.
- Providing inputs to and implementing policies and procedures.
- Travel to plant sites and industry events in support of SNC objectives
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited educational institution, or foreign equivalent, or Professional Engineer license, is required.
- Master’s of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited educational institution or foreign equivalent is preferred.
Background/Experience Requirements:
- Knowledge or experience with nuclear power plant design, systems, and/or operation is required.
- Nuclear power plant experience is preferred.
- Prior direct PRA work experience related to Internal Events, Internal Fire, Internal Flooding, and/or Seismic PRA is an advantage.
- Prior direct SSD, NPO, or NSCA model work experience is an advantage.
- Experience with standard PRA and SSD tools such as CAFTA, Franx, or Arc Plus is an advantage.
- High degree of analytical skills is preferred.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Organizational and time management skills are highly preferred.
- High degree of computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, and other database software) required.
- Demonstrated team player and self-starter.
- Be able to adapt to the changing priorities.
