Brief Job Overview/Summary
The Stockton University Marine Science Program seeks to fill a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September 1, 2026. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching marine science courses in a liberal arts environment, and a willingness to foster undergraduate research. All research areas will be considered, but particular consideration will be given to candidates whose research area complements those of faculty in the Marine Science program and researchers affiliated with the Stockton Marine Field Station and Coastal Research Center. Research interests might include, but are not limited to, marine botany, phytoplankton ecology, marine conservation, marine/estuarine microbiology, bioinformatics, or ecosystem modeling. We seek candidates who are dedicated to improving equity and belonging in higher education settings and fostering community within and beyond the university. Lastly, successful candidates will be committed to supporting active, experiential learning that is designed to support all incoming students regardless of academic preparation.
Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Teach a broad range of courses required for the Marine Biology concentration within the Marine Science major, including experiential laboratory sections
- Teaching load is 24 credit hours per academic year with lectures carrying 4 credit hours and laboratories 2 credit hours
- Potential course offerings may include introductory courses (such as Introduction to Marine Biology and Marine Science Methods and Analysis), upper-level marine science courses (such as Marine Botany, Biostatistics, Ecology, Marine Conservation Ecology, or a special topics seminar), and a general studies course. - Use a variety of innovative and evidence-based pedagogical approaches, including the use of technology and universal design, to support inclusive classroom environments
- Establish and sustain a marine science research program. Scholarly activities can include publications, presentations, seeking internal and external grant funding, and service on state and national committees and professional organizations
- Engage students in research experiences and expose students to new and relevant areas of marine science
- Serve as an advisor to undergraduate students
- Participate in service within and beyond the university
- Support Stockton University’s strong student-centered mission and commitment to diversity and inclusivity
Required Qualifications:
- PhD is required for appointment as Assistant Professor. ABD candidates will be considered at the Instructor level until the doctoral degree is completed. Doctoral degree must be conferred within one (1) academic year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-doctoral experience, whether in a research setting or relevant non-academic career
- Demonstrated experience in teaching marine science courses at the undergraduate level and in effective teaching practices
- Demonstrated record of marine science scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications and seeking external grant funding to support research
- Demonstrated experience in effective student mentorship, especially supporting undergraduate student research
