Responsibilities:
The Retired Member Organizer collaborates with the Retired Members Committee to develop and recommend programs and strategies to engage retired members in the activities of the MTA under MTA’s Strategic Action Plan, including the development of training programs and activities to build member capacity and engagement in MTA’s organizational and political activities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Works in concert with the Retired Members Committee, local leaders and elected leaders, and MTA staff in the development and implementation of a full program of organizational engagement for retired members. Develops and recommends strategies and programs to increase retired membership. Identifies issues of importance to retired members. Organizes retired members to act around issues of importance. Identifies leaders within the retired membership.Collects, maintains, and analyzes data related to member engagement and programs. Works with the Retired Members Committee, and MTA staff in the development of retired membership materials. In collaboration with MTA’s Communication Division, develops a communications strategy including social media, to engage retired members. Develops expertise in and stays current with the issues of retired members and recommends initiatives to advance their interests. In collaboration with the Retired Members Committee, and the MTA Division of Training and Professional Learning, designs and implements training programs for retired members. Develops strategies to increase the participation of retired members in MTA’s Legislative and Political Action Teams and in the political and legislative activities of the NEA. Works in cooperation with the appropriate program divisions of MTA/NEA to assure the needs of retired and are met. Collaborates with Division of Legal Services and part-time retirement consultants on pension issues. Carries out responsibilities with a positive, cooperative spirit. Assists Division staff in other Division work as assigned.
Specific Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Retired Members Committee, conducts periodic needs assessments and recommends programs and activities to strengthen the engagement of retired members in MTA locals. Implements strategies to identify and analyze retiree issues to support a broad range of program areas. In collaboration with the Retired Members Committee, and the MTA Training and Professional Learning Division, develops program content, speakers and logistics for retired and student member conferences and meetings. Speaks before large and small groups to promote MTA and issues affecting retired members. Provides staff assistance to Retired Members Committee and attends the meetings of the committee. Performs other duties as may be required.
** All “specialty organizer” positions include the following provision: Responsibilities may include up to .5 FTE devoted to working directly with locals to recruit, develop new leadership, support local bargaining issue campaigns, etc. This may include being assigned to locals as Field Representative-Organizer.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred. Understanding of and commitment to the mission and strategic goals of the MTA and the organized teaching profession. Understanding of key concepts and commitment to dismantling systems of oppression that create inequity by race, class, and gender.Knowledge of organizing strategies and significant experience organizing to promote membership and organizational engagement. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to successfully collaborate as a member of a team. Demonstrated leadership experience and organizing experience. Ability to motivate and inspire members to plan and carry out goals and timetables. Ability to establish, maintain, and enhance successful working relationships with members and staff colleagues and diverse community organizations and partners. Excellent writing and public speaking skills. Self-motivated with attention to detail and responsible follow-through. Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, and to create and produce written materials in a rapid fashion. Applied knowledge of common computerized business applications and use of databases. High energy and initiative and positive cooperative attitude. Automobile and license or other personal transportation required.Willingness to learn.
