The Communications Specialist (Executive Support) develops clear, effective communications that support Alabama Power’s leaders and business goals. This role focuses on executive messaging, internal communications and support for major corporate functions and events.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer and project manager who can work confidently with officers, coordinate across business units and support internal departments with daily communication needs.
Key Responsibilities
Executive and Leadership Communications
- Develop and execute communication plans that support executives and company priorities.
- Write and edit talking points, speeches, video scripts, presentations and internal messages.
- Translate complex topics into clear language and connect employees to the company’s strategies.
- Prepare leaders for meetings and forums by drafting remarks, Q&A and related materials.
Internal Communications
- Serve as the primary communications contact for assigned internal departments.
- Develop and deliver communication strategies, key messages and content that help employees understand priorities, changes and how their work supports company objectives.
- Write content for internal channels including intranet stories, emails, leader messages and content that can be adapted for other platforms.
- Ensure all internal communications reflect company values, tone and alignment with the company strategy.
Corporate Functions and Large Events
- Lead communication planning for major corporate functions in partnership with Public Relations and other teams.
- Coordinate with business units to align messages, logistics and deliverables.
- Develop run-of-show documents, scripts, talking points, presentation content and post-event recaps.
- Support speaker prep and day-of execution to ensure messaging is consistent and effective.
Issues, Storm and Emergency Communications
- Support Public Relations and internal teams during storms and emergencies.
- Draft timely internal messages and executive updates that support employee safety, customer focus and operational readiness.
Collaboration and Consulting
- Collaborate with the Employee and Executive Communications team and teams across the Public Relations department to develop and execute innovative communications strategies.
- Provide communication counsel to leaders and partners across the company.
- Build trusted relationships with officers, managers and peers.
- Partner with teams to ensure consistent, integrated messaging.
- Manage multiple projects, balancing long-term planning with quick-turn needs.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field preferred.
Experience
- 5–7 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, media or a related field.
- Proven experience writing for executives and internal audiences under tight deadlines.
- Experience in the electric utility industry or a similar regulated environment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to produce talking points, scripts, executive messages and internal content for multiple platforms.
- Ability to develop and execute communication plans that support business goals.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
- Comfortable leading communication work for large events and cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build professional relationships at all levels.
- Ability to analyze and communicate complex information clearly.
- Familiarity with traditional and digital communication tools and willingness to learn new platforms.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and business units.
- Ability to work under pressure with a strong sense of urgency.
- Curiosity and interest in learning the business, industry trends and company priorities.
