Constructability Lead – Construction Services
POSITION SUMMARY & LOCATION:
The position is responsible for leading the constructability program and providing construction planning support for the Technical Shared Services organization and other project teams across Southern Company. The Constructability Lead provides sound construction guidance and input during the early phases of project development and integrates with the project team throughout the Project Delivery Process (PDP). This position is located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate and/or lead Constructability Reviews via the internal guidelines to ensure constructability deliverables are met as required by the Project Delivery Process (PDP)
- Provide front end planning support and assist in the development of PDP project deliverables such as scopes of work, implementation plans, schedules, estimates, and labor studies
- Participate as a key contributor in PDP meetings, challenges, and reviews
- Work with project teams to provide estimates for construction management, temporary construction, heavy haul/heavy lift, craft labor, and indirect costs
- Perform the role of the Construction Manager until one is assigned to the project team
- Oversee the craft productivity improvement process ensuring best practices are integrated into the Pre-Construction phases of the project, and lead additional periodic reviews when necessary
- Own, maintain, and provide user support for the tools, procedures, and guidelines associated with Constructability, Advanced Work Packaging, Craft Labor Productivity, and Field Personnel support
- Develop and administer training for the policies, procedures, guidelines, and tools related to Constructability
- Travel as needed for things such as project site walk-downs, project team meetings, stakeholder engagement, conferences and events, etc.
- Lead efforts to engage with industry peers and related organizations such as CII and CURT
- Champion implementation of industry lessons learned and best practices such as AWP and Modularization
- Assist in the screening and pre-qualification of new contractor partners
- Manage and administer contracts with third party constructability partners
- Build and sustain strong, collaborative relationships with project teams, third‑party partners, design groups, and key internal stakeholders to enhance alignment, ensure seamless execution, and strengthen long‑term partnership opportunities
EXPERIENCE:
Education & Job Experience
- Accredited degree or global equivalent in Engineering, Building Science, or Construction Management preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of overall experience leading and/or managing construction field activities required
- Minimum of 5 years of field experience with large heavy industrial and/or power generation plant projects required
- Experience managing onsite construction activities for new generation projects including simple and combined cycle plants preferred
- Experience leading projects involving cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization preferred
- Experience planning all phases of construction for large heavy industrial and/or power generation plant projects preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of the overall engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning process
- Superior knowledge of construction means, methods, and materials associated with heavy industrial construction projects
- Ability to interpret engineering plans, drawings, and specifications
- Ability to manage multiple projects and thrive in a dynamic environment
- Proven interpersonal and communication skills working with project teams and other key stakeholders
- Strong computer skills, particularly proficiency with Microsoft Suite including SharePoint and Teams

TRAVEL:
- This position can require some travel – up to 50% per year.
- This may include some overnight travel and will primarily be within the Southern Company operating territory (AL, GA, MS).
