Job Summary
The Compliance Specialist position at Plant Greene County is a leader in the efforts to the educate and ensure safety of all plant personnel. This position provides onsite, field and office support to the workforce in the areas of Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection and Compliance. This position will attain and/or maintain a comprehensive knowledge of OSHA and other regulations related to safety & health and is willing to implement policies and ensure compliance with applicable standards. This position serves as the primary safety & health resource for plant employees, shares best practices with the fleet and coordinates initiatives with corporate safety & health. This position supports plant management in the implementation of the Southern Company Generation safety and health programs.
Education and Knowledge
- Power Generation / Industrial Plant experience – required
- Demonstrated knowledge of industrial safety and health programs, including but not limited to: PPE, Confined Space, Fall Prevention, Hazardous Communications, Hot Work, Arc Flash Protection, Fire Protection engineering, and administrative control measures, etc. – required
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA and other safety & health related regulations applicable to industrial workplaces - required
- Knowledge of power plant processes, equipment, work methods and procedures – preferred
- Working knowledge of emergency first responder procedures- preferred
- Working knowledge of fire protection standards in generating plants- preferred

Job Responsibility
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all Generation Safety and Health Programs, as well as OSHA and other safety and health related regulations at Plant Greene County
- Continuously promote safe work practices and accident prevention through safety programs
- Assist in the development, coordination and implementation of plant safety and health philosophies and policies (including new programs)
- Monitor the effectiveness of the safety and health policies and programs, identify opportunities for and coordinate improvement efforts (program reviews, periodic monitoring, hazard assessments, reporting)
- Lead and/or assist in accident/incident investigations; create meaningful reports and corrective actions
- Effectively communicate with all levels of employees, plant management and contract workforce
- Plan, coordinate and lead monthly safety meetings
- Attend and assist other departments with weekly safety meetings
- Mentor and advise the Plant Safety Committee to ensure team effectiveness
- Effectively interface with regulatory agencies
- Ensure contractor compliance as it relates to Safety and Health
- Maintain OSHA 300 logs and records
- Complete plant self-assessments for assurance of the safety and health programs’ effectiveness
- Occasional night and weekend support, based on plant needs
- Minimal travel required (<10%) for system meetings, seminars, training, etc.
- Provide direction on routine monthly fire protection maintenance, conduct monthly audits of fire protection checklists to ensure processes are being followed; and ensure semi-annual and annual checks on all fire protection equipment, including functional testing of critical fire alarm systems
- Provide strategic direction of maintenance needs and identify gaps for all fire protection equipment establishing short and long-term goals to ensure integrity of fire protection system
- Coordinate the Plant Greene County Emergency Response Team (ERT) as well as all emergency response requirements to ensure the plant meets all safety, regulatory, and site-specific expectations; coordinate Annual Rescue Rodeo
- System Owner R responsible for monthly budget tracking, monthly projections/variance explanations, and providing information annually for 5-year O&M/Capital budget forecasting
- Ensure compliance with all corporate policies as well as plant specific procedures/initiatives; and coordinate all fire protection related audits to include those performed by fire insurance carriers and internal personnel (EH&S)
- Provide support and training for plant personnel and Team Leaders in annual CPR/First Aid training including refresher training
- Ensure required reports (fire reports, equipment outage reports) are completed and forwarded to corporate per guidelines
- Troubleshoot problems related to Plant Fire Protection Systems
- Advise and assist in the formation of evacuation and emergency action plans for the plant
- Lead community outreach and support projects.
