JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for supporting the Risk Management and Insurance function by managing, collecting, and evaluating data needed for this department and particularly focused on nuclear loss control and insurance programs. This position will report to the Manager, Risk Management and will support the Manager, the Director of Risk Management, and other Risk Management colleagues as needed.
The role is an engineering position responsible for coordinating insurance company loss control and inspection services for the nuclear plant facilities as well as handling the day-to-day activities of the nuclear insurance program. A key component of this role will be coordinating and facilitating activities and communications between insurance companies and nuclear plant personnel.
The engineer will be knowledgeable in fire alarm/suppression and boiler and machinery systems, with an emphasis on hazard systems typically found in energy facilities with a particular focus on nuclear facilities.
As part of this role, the engineer will lead the external risk engineering inspections and surveys (both property and boiler and machinery). The engineer will facilitate between the site and various stakeholders the risk improvement projects that satisfy the recommendations from those surveys.
The engineer will be embedded as a critical member of various project teams as the risk management lead for various projects, such as new generation. They will be expected to provide subject matter expertise that is critical for the execution of the project, and that may have significant impacts to the viability or constructability of the asset.
This role should be willing to become a subject matter expert on our nuclear insurance programs including coverage language as it will be the day-to-day analyst on the programs.
This job will be located in Birmingham, AL and has potential to be both in person and remote (hybrid). Some travel, particularly to operating company locations (up to 25-30%) is required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years work experience at nuclear plant sites or in an engineering role required.
- 3+ years of relevant fire protection and risk engineering experience preferred
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering required
- Knowledge of fire protection engineering theories and principles
- Knowledge of NFPA codes, inclusive of those that are utilized in high hazard industrial applications
- Knowledge of industry insurance standards such as those from NEIL and ANI are a plus
- Ability to evaluate risks within energy and high hazard industrial environments
- Basic knowledge of property and machinery related failure modes and mitigations for large power generation equipment
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as MS Office Suite
- Proficiency with Excel is required
- Demonstrates ability to work well with others in a collaborative and fast paced environment
- Ability to exercise leadership skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrates ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
- Experience in providing quality internal/external customer service
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Service insurance programs including preparing information needed for the nuclear policy renewals
+ Assist with premium/distribution allocation, surplus line tax filings, and with budgets as respects nuclear insurance and/or property programs
- Loss control and insurance consulting services primarily for our nuclear plant facilities
+ Coordinate inspections and follow up between plant contacts and insurers to identify and evaluate risks associated with ongoing operations or new/emerging exposures and recommend appropriate risk mitigation actions
- Special projects as assigned from time to time by the Manager, Risk Management or Director, Risk Management
- Reporting, handling and negotiating (with insurance company adjusters) certain insurance related claims which fall under your responsibility. At times, acting as liaison between client company claims handling personnel and insurers
- Learn and work on contractual risk review
- Utilize and work with internal and external stakeholders, including senior analysts, brokers, and industry peers to develop and perform with in-depth knowledge of loss control and insurance best practices. Participate in industry and professional activities including continuing professional development
