This position is responsible for delivering enterprise-level economic, sales, and revenue insights that support senior executives, investor communications, and regulatory proceedings by translating macroeconomic, industry, and customer trends into timely, actionable intelligence. Reporting jointly to the Chief Economist (dotted line) and the Director of Forecasting & Analytics (hard line), the role leads cross-functional economic and analytic initiatives, maintains monitoring tools, and drives consistent monthly sales/revenue variance analytics across Southern Company and its Operating Companies (OpCos) to support earnings communications and OpCo finance stakeholders.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years in finance, economic analysis, or a related field, with a proven track record of supporting executive-level leadership and producing executive-ready insights (including earnings-related narratives and time-sensitive leadership requests).
- Demonstrated expertise in applied economics and business analytics, including assessing financial/economic trends and translating macroeconomic and industry trends into implications for sales, revenue, and load/economic drivers in the energy sector. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proficiency in data analysis.
- Proficiency with analytic tools such as advanced Excel, SQL/data querying, and/or Business Intelligence visualization tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and project management experience, including leading cross-functional analytic initiatives and coordinating deliverables across multiple stakeholders (enterprise and OpCos).
- Adaptability and quick learning in fast-paced environments; ability to manage stress, balance multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Economic Monitoring & Analysis for the Enterprise
- Lead ongoing monitoring of the economic environment and produce analyses that translate economic conditions into actionable insights for company planning and strategy.
- Maintain economic assumptions used across forecasting and updates to executives.
Monthly Sales & Revenue Variance Leadership
- Lead monthly sales and revenue variance analyses and ensure consistency of methods, assumptions, and narrative across OpCos and the Southern Company CFO organization.
- Coordinate closely with the Forecasting team to identify and promote model/process improvements that improve variance accuracy.
- Coordinate inputs, validate data, reconcile differences, and deliver clear variance drivers suitable for executive-level review.
Earnings & Executive Support: Economic Drivers and Key Messages
- Provide economic-driver insights and responses that support quarterly earnings preparation and related executive requests.
- Organize and prioritize ad hoc analytic requests, ensuring timely delivery and consistent messaging.
Regulatory Support
- Support regulatory deliverables by developing or reviewing economic, sales, and revenue analyses for filings, and by responding to high‑scrutiny data requests from external stakeholders.
