As part of the AWS Applied AI Solutions organization, we have a vision to provide business applications, leveraging Amazon’s unique experience and expertise, that are used by millions of companies worldwide to manage day-to-day operations. We will accomplish this by accelerating our customers’ businesses through delivery of intuitive and differentiated technology solutions that solve enduring business challenges. We blend vision with curiosity and Amazon’s real-world experience to build opinionated, turnkey solutions. Where customers prefer to buy over build, we become their trusted partner with solutions that are no-brainers to buy and easy to use.
Genomics researchers, drug discovery teams, and scientists shouldn't need to manage compute resources and workflow engines — they should be focused on scientific breakthroughs. AWS HealthOmics is a HIPAA-eligible service that fully manages bioinformatics workflow infrastructure at scale, and our Usability Team's mission is to make the experience feel effortless.
As an engineer on this team, you'll build the APIs and developer tools that put genomic analysis directly into customers' workflows: the Kiro plugin, SDK, and platform APIs that support thousands of bioinformatics pipelines daily. You'll tackle problems like: How do we design APIs that developers enjoy using? How do we build scalable solutions that make complex pipelines feel intuitive to the end user? You'll work across the stack — from service architecture and API design to the integration points that shape the customer experience. You'll partner with UX designers and product managers, use data to drive iteration, and influence technical direction as we grow. If you love turning "this is confusing" into "this just works," we'd love to talk.
You'll thrive in this role if you're energized by making complex systems feel simple. You have experience building scalable backend services and designing APIs, and you think deeply about developer experience when making architectural choices. You identify and eliminate sources of complexity in existing workflows, whether that means clearer defaults, better documentation, or rethinking an API surface entirely. You use data to drive decisions, defining and tracking usability metrics to validate that your solutions actually work for customers. You contribute to technical direction, including architecture decisions for services operating at scale. You mentor teammates and advocate for the customer experience across the stack, from service design to the integration points developers interact with.
Key job responsibilities
A day in the life
A typical week might include writing a design document for a new Kiro feature, debating API ergonomics with teammates in a code review, diving into customer feedback to find the next opportunity to simplify, or instrumenting a workflow to measure whether a change actually reduced friction. You'll collaborate across disciplines (UX, product, platform teams) but your core work is in code, architecture, and systems thinking.
AWS HealthOmics fully manages bioinformatics workflow infrastructure so healthcare, life science, and agriculture organizations can focus on scientific discovery rather than operations. Our Usability Team owns the customer-facing experiences that make this possible: the Kiro plugin, SDK, and platform APIs. We're a small team with high ownership, building for customers across the technical spectrum — from bioinformaticians running thousands of production pipelines daily to researchers exploring genomic data for the first time. We write design docs before code and value operational excellence as much as feature velocity.
