BESS Engineer/Analyst (SPC Renewable Energy O&M)
WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, AND TRAVEL
- This position is preferred to be based out of the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.
- Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- Relocation assistance is available if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
- Overnight travel is required to renewable facilities located in various parts of the United States (primarily California, but not limited to, Georgia, West Virginia, Texas, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Maine, Washington, New Mexico, and Kansas).
POSITION SUMMARY
The BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) Engineer/Analyst is a critical role within Southern Power. Southern Power owns and operates a growing portfolio of renewable and battery energy storage assets across the United States. This role supports the operational, technical, commercial, and contractual performance of utility-scale BESS facilities, with significant engagement across asset management, compliance, commercial operations, OEMs, and service providers.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology is highly preferred
Experience
Required experience and skills include:
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: power plant operations and maintenance, project engineering, or asset management, preferably in renewables
- Project management skills (managing scope, schedule, and budget)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred experience and skills include:
- Contract management experience
- Experience managing capital and O&M budgets
- Experience using asset management software such as Maximo
- Ability to interpret operational data – PI or OIS experience a plus
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (P&ID drawings, single lines, etc.)
- Ability to develop and communicate Key Performance Indicators to internal and external stakeholders
- Basic understanding of plant control systems including SCADA, PLC, DCS, etc.
- Experience managing multiple medium- to large-scale projects
Other relevant experience includes:
- Power plant design and construction
- Generation development
- Utility system planning
Key Responsibilities
- Support SPC O&M strategy for current and future BESS facilities
- Manage service agreements and contracts including LTSAs (Long-Term Service Agreements), PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements), BESAs (Battery Equipment Supply Agreements) and others
- Optimize the performance of SPC’s BESS fleet through the interpretation of operational data, service logs, and various other sources
- Develop status reports and presentations for management, peer groups, and other internal and external stakeholders
- Develop and maintain capital and O&M budgets to optimize net income and ensure cost-effective utilization of company assets
- Develop and implement asset management strategies to streamline data entry, improve record retention, and minimize the potential for missed objectives
- Ensure that all compliance and regulatory requirements are met
- Coordinate site visits to renewable facilities for internal and external stakeholders
- Attend conferences to develop and leverage relationships with industry peers and OEMs to ensure SPC continues to be competitive in BESS projects and solutions
- Work and communicate effectively with other SPC departments concerning BESS operations including Generation Support, Commercial Optimization Transmission and Trading (COT&T), Project Development, Project Analysis and Market Assessment (PAMA), Compliance, and others as needed.
- Support due diligence of asset acquisitions and new development projects
