Are you someone who thrives on building reliable, scalable systems and making the lives of engineers around you easier? As a System Development Engineer I at Amazon, you will play a key role in improving the development, testing, deployment, and operations of the systems your team depends on. You will solve real problems that directly impact how quickly and reliably your team delivers for customers. From writing clean, maintainable code to automating repetitive tasks and strengthening system resilience, your work will have a tangible effect on the quality and speed of everything your team ships. If you are curious, collaborative, and excited to grow your technical skills while making meaningful contributions from day one, this is the role for you.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and deliver software, tooling, and automation that improve the reliability, efficiency, and performance of your team's systems, ensuring operational excellence across the full product development lifecycle.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system failures by diagnosing root causes across hardware, software, and operating environments — even in systems you did not build — and implement lasting fixes that leave things better than you found them.
- Write well-tested, logical, and maintainable code while actively seeking design and code reviews from peers, incorporating feedback to continuously raise the quality of your work.
- Identify points of failure in managed systems and develop monitoring metrics and automated solutions that reduce manual effort, improve system resilience, and help your team deliver more quickly.
- Collaborate with teammates to improve documentation, runbooks, and operational processes, and evaluate opportunities to integrate generative artificial intelligence tools responsibly to augment productivity and output quality.
A day in the life
You might start your morning reviewing system health dashboards and responding to alerts before diving into a coding task — perhaps building a new automation script or refining an existing deployment pipeline. After a design review with your team, you could spend the afternoon debugging a tricky operational issue, tracing it across multiple components to find the root cause. Along the way, you will pair with teammates, ask questions, and pick up new techniques that sharpen your skills and broaden your understanding of how your systems fit into the bigger picture.
About the team
Our team is focused on making it easier, faster, and more reliable for builders at Amazon to develop and operate their systems. We value collaboration, continuous learning, and a shared commitment to operational excellence. Every team member has a voice in design discussions and prioritization, and we invest in mentoring one another so that everyone grows. If you are looking for a team where your contributions matter, where you will be supported as you learn, and where you can help shape how we build for the future, we would love to hear from you.
