Principal Trainer (GPC Protection & Control – Engineering Training)
Job Summary
This position is responsible for the successful development, validation, and delivery of technical training programs for Power Delivery Protection & Control (P&C) employees in Georgia. The primary focus is P&C Field Services, P&C Applications, and P&C Design training while also supporting overall Power Delivery cross-functional training initiatives.
The role involves managing engineering training courses, collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on learning objectives and content, and recruiting SME instructors for each learning path. This position will coordinate with relevant committees, management, and peers to deliver high-quality and innovative training aimed at preparing employees for Power Delivery engineering roles. Additionally, this position will engage with field management and employees to stay informed of customer needs and consistently promote Safety Excellence.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a four-year accredited university or a technical degree is preferred, or alternatively, a non-technical degree with significant power delivery operations experience.
- Must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in design, construction, maintenance and/or protection & controls.
- Professional Engineer’s license is preferred.
- Previous experience as a trainer or curriculum developer is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and personal leadership skills.
- Proficiency in working with and interpreting Southern Company substation protection and control design standards and schemes is preferred.
- Knowledge of the operating philosophy of the system and fault data analysis.
- Experience in and technical knowledge of Power Delivery equipment including switches, breakers, transformers, relay schemes, voltage regulators, automation devices, SCADA, fault data equipment, etc.
- Knowledge of carrier, pilot relaying, test equipment, relaying, control techniques and equipment.
- Working knowledge of Georgia Power I.T.S. practices and procedures is preferred.
- Knowledge of policies, procedures, & regulatory requirements related to applicable work practices including OSHA, HAZCOM, Human Resources, etc.
- General knowledge of Adult Learning Theory and evaluation procedures used to enhance the development, presentation, and maintenance of training programs is a plus.

Job Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for Georgia Power P&C training. Support other SMEs with curriculum development and class planning. Facilitate and co-instruct classes when needed.
- Oversee and direct the development and delivery of the Georgia Power P&C training programs to ensure safe and productive work habits.
- Create training aides and innovative exercises for real-world practical training opportunities.
- Support the standardization of Southern Company Power Delivery system-wide training.
- Ensure training curriculum aligns with Power Delivery Safety initiatives.
- Work closely with the Power Delivery Training team to manage budgets, share facilities/resources and support Power Delivery workforce training.
- Will be required to support storm restoration efforts
