Corrosion Technician I – III
The purpose of this position is to maintain the corrosion control facilities and systems put in place to prevent the corrosion and degradation of facilities owned and operated by Virginia Natural Gas. This position will ensure corrosion control measures in place and effectively documented as required by relevant policies and codes and provide corrosion control support to VNG operations as required. The Corrosion Technician is a focused discipline within a job family. The duties listed are activities associated with the various levels of the engineering progression.
This progression covers the following general titles:
- Corrosion Technician I
- Corrosion Technician II
- Corrosion Technician III
Functional Expertise:
- Responsible to perform required surveys (i.e., annual test points, isolated services, casings, bonds, foreign crossings) in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and procedures.
- Responsible for timely cathodic protection troubleshooting (i.e., low systems, shorted conditions)
- Responsible for timely creation of remediation work orders (i.e., install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station). Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
- Responsible for maintenance and updates of corrosion control mapping systems to the system of record (GIS) in a timely fashion
- Responsible for performance of QA checks of survey data collected by others
- Responsible for troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
- Responsible for calibrating reference cells in accordance with procedures
- Responsible for exposed gas piping in accordance with procedures
- Responsible for design of corrosion control systems
Business Acumen:
- Monitors corrosion control records to ensure compliance
Engagement:
- Provides relevant support / inspection for cathodic protection needs on engineering / construction projects
- Provides corrosion control-related support to Integrity Management Departments as needed
Driving Results:
- Generates reports as needed - Assists with implementation of Accelerated Actions (DIMP) & additional Preventive and Mitigative measures (TRIMP)
- Accurately records compliance records into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion
- Participates as needed in regulatory audits to ensure success Qualifications
Corrosion Technician I
A Corrosion Technician I may enter the role with little / no corrosion control experience. Initially, the Corrosion Technician I will complete work under the guidance of a more experienced Corrosion Technician. Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- High school diploma with equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
- NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
+ Pipeline or plumbing experience

Corrosion Technician II
The Corrosion Technician II can perform most activities independently.

- Associate degree – technical / trade school with math or science-based curriculum
- NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
Preferred:
- NACE CP2 (Cathodic Protection Technician)
Work Experience:
Required:
- 3 years pipeline cathodic protection / corrosion control

- MS Office – intermediate proficiency

- Knowledge of electrical principles

Corrosion Technician III

- NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
- NACE CP2 (Cathodic Protection Technician)
Preferred:
- NACE CP3 (Cathodic Protection Technologist)
- NACE Sr. Corrosion Technologist Certification
- NACE CIP 1 or NACE PCS 1
Related Work Experience:
Required:
- 6+ years pipeline cathodic protection / corrosion control
Preferred:
- 10 years pipeline cathodic protection / corrosion control experience.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Travel: Frequent local travel with occasional (5 – 20%) overnight travel.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Physical Demands: This position frequently requires prolonged standing or walking.
- This position frequently requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder level.
- This position frequently requires the incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
