Communications Specialist
Job Summary
The Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing and executing strategic communications initiatives that support Southern Company’s internal and external messaging. This position requires a seasoned communicator with 3–5 years of experience in corporate communications, marketing, or public relations. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and content strategist who can manage complex projects across multiple formats—including print, digital, video, and live events—and collaborate effectively across teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement integrated communications plans that align with business objectives and stakeholder needs.
- Research, write, edit, and distribute high-impact content across channels including internal websites, newsletters, executive messaging, infographics, and videos.
- Partner with subject matter experts and leadership to shape messaging, clarify goals, and build content calendars.
- Provide strategic input on communication timing, tone, and delivery vehicles to maximize engagement.
- Lead or support production of communication materials, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
- Analyze communication effectiveness and recommend improvements based on metrics and feedback.
- Support special events and campaigns with tailored messaging and collateral.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field required
- 3+ years of professional experience in corporate communications, marketing, or public relations required
- Proven ability to write and edit content for diverse formats and audiences.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience with internal communications platforms and content management systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel); familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and web publishing tools is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to influence and build relationships across departments.
- Creative thinker with a strategic mindset and a passion for storytelling.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- The incumbent works in an office environment four days week.
