JOB SUMMARY:
This role is in the Corporate Development & Analysis (CDA) organization of Southern Company Services (“SCS”). This position interacts with and supports the financial and strategic analysis departments of the operating companies and SCS in making investment decision needs. This position assists in assessing strategic opportunities and performing transaction activities with the goal of enabling growth in-line with Southern’s strategy and shareholder value proposition.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or related technical field required.
- MBA or advanced degree in Finance is a plus.
- While experience and knowledge in utility or energy-related finance is not required, it would be a plus.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 3 months experience in the area of Finance required.
- Will consider new college graduates as long as you meet the degree requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office products - especially Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint; working knowledge of utility accounting and financial analysis theory.
- Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with peers and management at various levels.
- Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple tasks, and good organizational skills are required.
- Candidate should have a proven track record of innovation and problem solving.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide proactive support for the financial analysis and strategic decision support needs of all subsidiaries and business units including retail, wholesale, and functional businesses.
- Evaluating, screening and analyzing M&A opportunities for Southern Company and all subsidiaries and business units including retail, wholesale, and functional businesses as appropriate.
+ Supporting overall processes, negotiations and execution efforts on material/select acquisitions and divestitures, and new business development including strategy development, competitive intelligence, due diligence, risk assessment, and corporate analysis.
+ Keeping abreast of electric and gas industries, financial markets and competitive trends.
- Supporting the implementation of corporate financial policy through sound application of investment valuation methods and criteria including, but not limited to DCF, financial statement analysis, development of risk adjusted hurdle rates, capitalization thresholds, and other metrics as appropriate.
- Liaison between tax, accounting, treasury, capital markets and legal to ensure accurate analysis,
- Develop, maintain, and implement financial analysis and strategic modeling tools to meet the needs of internal AFT and system-wide organizations.
- Provide proactive leadership in development and implementation of training programs that create a fundamental understanding of relevant financial and business concepts for internal and external employees.
- Assessing strategic options with respect to monetizing investments and redeploying capital.
- Supporting the negotiation and structuring of material agreements.
