Fleet Principal Motor Engineer (Birmingham preferred or remote hybrid within the SNC footprint may be considered).
Summary of Position Duties:
This position is assigned to the Fleet Plant Engineering Support Electrical and Controls (I&C) Manager and provides support to the Southern Nuclear fleet (8 operating units) for medium and low voltage AC and VFD motor support.
This position will also be responsible for governance and oversight of motor maintenance and life cycle management programs, including long range planning, performance monitoring, procedure development, and specification development input. Position will be filled at a level commensurate with successful candidate's skills and experience level. Candidates with strong motor technical abilities but limited nuclear experience will be considered; however, considerable nuclear plant experience is highly desired.
Job and Educational Requirements:
- B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or Industrial Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university preferred; however, a Bachelor of Science in an alternative engineering curriculum or Professional License (P.E.) combined with in-depth experience in power generation will be considered.
- Must be able to satisfy the minimum SNC physical requirements of the position.
- Experience with various motor designs, maintenance practices, refurbishment and repair practices, troubleshooting techniques, and monitoring techniques is highly desired.
- Troubleshooting experience, Vendor Factory Acceptance Testing, Performance testing and site acceptance tests.
- Experience supporting Maintenance and Engineering in resolution of motor equipment issues including on-site, repair facility, or field experience supporting special projects or outages.
- A minimum of 5 years’ motor experience (with 2 years working at or performing motor repairs elsewhere supporting a nuclear generation facility) is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
One or more of the following attributes are desired for a successful candidate but not required:
- A strong technical background in engineering, and working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to nuclear power generating facilities.
- The ability to solve problems and make sound engineering judgments, based on experience and proper application of industry practices, provide timely and appropriate resolutions to motor component issues that might impact plant operation or safety.
- Knowledge of design basis, configuration management, project management, procurement and specifications, and the design modification process.
- A detailed knowledge of motors used in nuclear power generating facilities.
- The expertise to address operational, maintenance, and reliability issues for medium and low voltage AC motors.
- Develop Life Cycle Plans and strategies for maintaining or replacing motors to ensure reliable and economical operation and maintenance of the power plants in the fleet.
- Implement and/or maintain motor Equipment Reliability programs for the SNC fleet of plants.
- Communicate motor technical issues and drive problem resolution through various levels of management at the plant sites and corporate office.
- Work effectively across diverse groups at the plant sites and corporate office to drive standard technical solutions to motor component issues.
- Experience and knowledge to technically interface vendors and service suppliers on motor procurement, repair plan development, troubleshooting, resolving performance problems and critique vendor performance.
- The ability to ensure SNC stays abreast of emerging issues and technological developments within the assigned area of responsibility, to work closely with site Engineering Support and Maintenance personnel by providing expertise for assigned components and programs.
- The ability to assist in the development, review and approval of specifications for motors.

- Candidate must maintain unescorted site access and NRC Fitness for Duty
- Must work alternate shifts and extended hours during Maintenance Outages
