This position will report to the Environmental Affairs-Water Field Services department in Calera, AL. It will provide support for environmental studies related to hydro licensing and water quality monitoring to meet regulatory requirements. This position will also provide environmental field sampling and monitoring support to Alabama Power Company’s generation facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental requirements.
Activities performed by this position will adhere to requirements of the National Environmental Field Activities Program (NEFAP) for field sampling and measurement organizations. The successful candidate must be able to pass applicable proficiency tests, perform data entry and analysis for quality control, and participate in peer reviews, training and implementation of Technical and Quality Standard Operating Procedures in accordance with this program.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collect water quality data and samples (including reservoir water chemistry samples) to ensure Hydro operations comply with environmental regulations
- Perform field maintenance, calibration and quality control of water quality monitoring equipment and manage inventory to support compliance and research activities
- Independently maintain QA/QC schedule for compliance monitoring sites
- Provide continuous review of water quality data to ensure compliance is being maintained, data is accurate, and aeration systems/operational measures are being utilized
- Analyze environmental data to identify and address errors as part of a rigorous quality control/quality assurance program
- Work with internal departments (EA Compliance, Reservoir Management and EA Electronic & Data Services) to maintain and update systems that facilitate and streamline recordkeeping of hydro plant operations
- Support internal workgroups with water quality monitoring and sample collection related to various environmental laws and regulations including NPDES, RCRA, CCR and CERCLA as needed

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Environmental Science, Biology, Fisheries, Chemistry, etc.) preferred
- Experience conducting environmental sampling and data analysis
- Minimum of 2 years of experience using, calibrating, and maintaining water quality monitoring equipment to collect field measurements including dissolved oxygen and temperature
- Safety oriented mindset
- Experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, R, SPSS or related statistical and data management programs
Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge of FERC Hydro licensing and compliance
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in adverse weather conditions
- Ability to serve as part of an occasional, scheduled on-call rotation (after hours, weekends and holidays)
- Experience trailering, launching, and operating boats
- Possess strong communication, organizational, and recordkeeping skills
- Possess a strong commitment to maintaining compliance, integrity and ethics
