Manager, Load Flexibility and Analysis
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Manager of Load Flexibility and Analysis will lead a team to encourage demand side flexibility, value flexibility for the system, and integrate it into the planning process. This team will lead the design and expansion of use cases associated with dispatchable distributed energy resources (“DER”), demand response (“DR”), and other customer program options, providing expertise on cost drivers, economic evaluations, and other demand side management topics. The Load Flexibility and Analysis team will proactively monitor industry trends and develop new analysis and modeling techniques for emerging demand side technologies. This team will also be responsible for energy efficiency economic evaluations, and support regulatory requirements associated with this analysis.
Additionally, the Manager of Load Flexibility and Analysis will lead a team responsible for detailed engineering studies, energy simulations, economic analysis, and the annual development of the system's marginal costing tool. Output from this team will be used to inform and support peer organizations and regulatory filings across state regulated electric operating companies, including integrated resource plans and rate cases. The position must effectively engage and partner with planning, operations, regulatory, pricing, marketing, policy, research, innovation, and customer functions across the system to execute organizational goals. The Manager of Load Flexibility and Analysis may be asked to represent the Company in regulatory filings and hearings, as well as represent the Company in other external engagements.
Primary job responsibilities in this position include:
- Lead a team to provide expertise and strategic partnership on load flexibility topics
+ Serve as a system resource on load flexibility initiatives
+ Lead the design of new DR, DER, and other customer program options
+ Engage internal and external parties on research, methodologies, and applications of demand side planning
+ Produce new tools and techniques to evaluate demand side resources and their system value
- Lead a team responsible for engineering studies, economic model development, and end-use energy analysis
+ Deliver studies, tools, and analysis used in new business evaluation, DSM and energy efficiency evaluations, cost of service studies, and technical potential studies
+ Serve as a system resource on the use of the system marginal cost model
+ Leverage energy end-use simulations to provide strategic input to demand side planning activities
+ Inform embedded costing and cost of service deliverables through oversight of engineering studies
- Lead regulatory communications and filings
+ Develop regulatory strategies for load flexibility at operating company request, including capabilities in program design, filing preparation, data requests, and as an expert witness as needed
+ Develop energy efficiency economic evaluations and support regulatory requirements associated with this analysis at operating company request
- Effectively lead and develop a team
+ Hire, train and maximize team performance
+ Develop and mentor employees
+ Partner with peer managers on agile workflow processes
- Travel to clients to effectively serve system needs
- The Manager of Load Flexibility and Analysis may be asked to represent the Company in regulatory filings and hearings, as well as represent the Company in other external engagements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- BS or higher in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Math, Policy or other related technical fields is required; advanced degree in these fields is preferred
- At least 5 years of experience in utility operations, planning, program design, economic analysis, customer, or related functions required; 10+ years is preferred
- Formal leadership experience is preferred
- Deep knowledge of utility operations, planning, pricing theory, regulatory mechanisms, cost/benefit analysis, and/or energy industry trends required
- Must have solid experience working with Microsoft tools
