Job Summary
Southern Company is seeking an experienced, high‑performing Engineer to support Plant Scherer, one of the largest generation facilities in the United States.
This role is intended for engineers with 10+ years of experience in power generation or heavy industrial environments who bring strong technical depth, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to lead complex initiatives. Senior Engineers at Plant Scherer play a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation, while serving as technical leaders, mentors, and trusted partners to Operations, Maintenance, and leadership teams.
The successful candidate will be expected to own plant systems, lead cross‑functional efforts, influence decision‑making, and proactively identify risks and opportunities impacting long‑term asset performance.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & System Ownership
- Serve as a technical authority for assigned plant systems, equipment, or engineering programs.
- Provide expert engineering judgment for equipment performance issues, design changes, risk assessments, and operational challenges.
- Lead or support complex troubleshooting efforts, root cause analyses (RCA), and development of sustainable corrective actions.
- Ensure engineering solutions are practical, safe, and aligned with plant operational realities.
Project Management
- Lead engineering projects from concept through implementation, including scope development, engineering design, contractor coordination, cost control, and schedule management.
- Develop and execute multi‑year improvement strategies for reliability, performance, and lifecycle asset management.
- Support capital planning, budget development, and prioritization of engineering initiatives.
Reliability, Performance & Process Optimization
- Analyze equipment and system performance to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Partner with Operations and Maintenance to improve equipment reliability, availability, and efficiency.
- Apply industry best practices, fleet guidance, and operating experience to plant‑specific challenges.
- Support condition‑based maintenance (CBM), predictive technologies, and reliability‑centered maintenance efforts.
Maintenance & Operations Support
- Provide technical leadership during maintenance planning, execution, and post‑work reviews.
- Support forced and planned outage activities, including troubleshooting, work scope development, and lessons learned.
- Collaborate closely with operators, planners, and craftsmen to ensure engineering decisions support safe and efficient execution.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Perform all work in accordance with Southern Company safety values, OSHA requirements, and environmental regulations.
- Lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture, accountability, and environmental stewardship.
- Ensure safety and compliance are embedded in all engineering designs, modifications, and RCA outcomes.
- Support regulatory, environmental, and internal compliance initiatives as required.
Mentorship & Communication
- Work effectively with cross‑functional teams including Operations, Maintenance, Environmental, Compliance, and Engineering peers.
- Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to a wide range of audiences, including plant leadership.
- Mentor and support the development of early‑career engineers and peers.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on technical and operational matters.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving best practices in power generation.
- Champion innovative solutions that enhance safety, reliability, and operational excellence.
- Actively participate in fleet‑wide forums, working groups, and technical conferences, and translate learnings into actionable plant improvements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 10 or more years of engineering experience in power generation, utilities, or heavy industrial environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical efforts and influence cross‑functional teams.
- Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and decision‑making skills.
- Proven experience managing engineering projects and/or plant systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Maximo, Tableau, and Power BI.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive experience in coal, combined cycle, or large‑scale power generation facilities.
- Strong working knowledge of boilers, turbines, generators, balance‑of‑plant systems, and auxiliary equipment.
- Experience with asset management and maintenance systems (e.g., Maximo or similar).
- Familiarity with data analytics, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or MBA preferred.
- Experience serving as a system owner, technical lead, or reliability engineer.
