Job Summary
Southern Company is seeking a dedicated, motivated, and skilled Engineer to join the team at Plant Scherer, one of the largest power generation facilities in the United States. These roles are ideal for individuals who bring a strong engineering foundation, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn and grow in a complex industrial environment.
Engineers at Plant Scherer support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations through hands‑on engineering support, project execution, and close collaboration with operations and maintenance teams. This position offers broad exposure to plant systems and provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical engineering skills while making a real impact.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Lead and manage engineering projects from concept through implementation, including scoping, design coordination, scheduling, and cost tracking.
Process Optimization
- Provide technical support for plant equipment and systems, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
- Partner with operations and maintenance teams to improve equipment reliability and performance.
- Analyze plant processes and systems to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to develop and execute preventive and corrective maintenance strategies.
- Provide technical expertise during equipment troubleshooting and repairs
Maintenance Support:
Safety & Compliance
- Perform all work in accordance with Southern Company safety values, OSHA requirements, and environmental regulations.
- Actively promote a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship.
- Prioritize safety in all design work and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with cross‑functional teams including operations, maintenance, environmental, and engineering peers.
- Clearly communicate technical information through reports, presentations, and informal discussions.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies.
- Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance plant performance.
- Actively participate and attend Fleet wide meetings and conferences and implement industry best practices at Plant Scherer.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Strong technical fundamentals with the ability to apply engineering principles in an industrial setting.
- Proven project management skills and the ability to lead cross-functional team
- Demonstrated willingness to learn, take initiative, and work as part of a team.
- Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in power generation, manufacturing, heavy industry, or utilities.
- Strong knowledge of power plant systems, including boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment.
- Familiarity with maintenance or asset management systems (e.g., Maximo or similar).
- Exposure to data analysis, reporting tools, or continuous improvement methods.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or interest in pursuing licensure.
