Application Analyst (Primavera Center of Excellence)
Location: Birmingham, AL (Onsite 4 days a week)
Job Summary
The Primavera Center of Excellence (COE) within Southern Company’s Technology Organization (Enterprise Technology Solutions) implements and supports enterprise applications used across Generation (Fossil, Hydro, and Nuclear), Transmission, Distribution, Technical Shared Services, and Project Management Offices (PMOs), including scheduling groups across Southern Company operating companies.
This role provides functional and technical production support for the COE’s portfolio (including Oracle Primavera P6 and Unifier, ScheduleAnywhere, Contruent, XER Manager, and Fuse) and participates in the full software lifecycle: implementation, configuration, upgrades/patching, integrations, and issue resolution. The analyst partners with business users and vendors to keep systems available, secure, and aligned to business processes, and to help users adopt new features.
Leveling: This position may be filled at Exempt Level 4, 5, or 6 based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day production support for COE applications (Primavera P6/Unifier, Contruent, ScheduleAnywhere, XER Manager, Fuse, and related tools), including incident triage, troubleshooting, and user support.
- Plan and execute application implementations, patches, and upgrades, including testing, cutover activities, and post-deployment validation.
- Maintain working knowledge of supported platforms and roadmaps; evaluate new features and recommend improvements that increase usability, reliability, and value.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of end-to-end business processes supported by the COE applications (e.g., project controls, scheduling, cost management, and reporting).
- Elicit, document, and validate functional requirements and translate them into technical specifications, including data, integration, and security considerations.
- Configure applications to meet approved business requirements, applying standard configurations when possible and documenting exceptions and rationale.
- Design, build, and support integrations and data transfers between COE applications and upstream/downstream systems (including monitoring, error handling, and reconciliation).
- Coordinate with internal technology partners (e.g., DBAs, Citrix, server/hosting, security) and application vendors to support architecture, environment health, access, and performance.
- Own issue management through resolution, including prioritization, vendor escalation, root-cause analysis, and communication of status/ETA to stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with business partners across operating companies to enable effective implementations, training/adoption, and ongoing support.
- Support project managers with reporting, metrics, and stakeholder updates (e.g., status, risks, issues, dependencies, and release communications) as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Experience implementing, maintaining, and supporting vendor-developed enterprise applications in a production environment.
- Experience with application lifecycle activities (implementation, configuration, patching/upgrades, testing, and release/cutover support).
- Experience supporting applications delivered through Citrix (or similar virtual application/desktop environments).
- Experience administering or supporting Java application server environments (e.g., Oracle WebLogic).
- Experience working with relational databases (Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server), including basic query and troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of IT service management / software support practices (e.g., incident, problem, and change management).
- Demonstrated ability to manage work across multiple priorities and deliver project tasks on time.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with employees, peers, leaders, and external vendors.
- Coordinate work across Technology Organization functions (e.g., infrastructure, security, database, and end-user computing) to resolve issues and deliver changes.
- Ability to write and troubleshoot SQL queries.
Preferred
- Primavera Unifier and/or Primavera P6 technical implementation and support experience.
- Knowledge of finance and accounting concepts as they relate to project controls and cost management.
- Formal project management experience (leading small to mid-size initiatives, coordinating resources, managing schedules, risks, and budgets).
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).
