Project Engineer – Renewable and Resilient Generation
Job Summary
The Project Engineer – Renewable and Resilient Generation will serve as Georgia Power’s owner representative for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Solar, Solar + Storage, and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) projects. This role provides engineering leadership and oversight during both the development and implementation phases and ongoing site engineering support after commercial operation for new and existing renewable sites.
This position manages owner activities throughout the execution phase of the EPC process, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, and O&M readiness. Working collaboratively with Southern Company Services, the Project Engineer supports the execution of utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, and microgrid projects. The role also partners with cross-functional teams across Georgia Power—including Power Delivery, Environmental, Resource Planning, Regulatory, Accounting, Legal, and Area Management—to ensure project excellence, clear communication, and compliance with all regulatory and contractual requirements.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as Georgia Power’s owner representative for renewable and resilient generation projects, ensuring alignment with company objectives and standards.
- Collaborate with Southern Company Services and cross-functional Georgia Power teams to support the execution of self-build solar, battery energy storage, and microgrid projects.
- Provide engineering leadership and technical oversight throughout the EPC lifecycle, including design reviews (30%, 60%, and 100%), procurement, construction, commissioning, and project controls.
- Conduct site visits to assess construction progress, validate engineering practices, and ensure project quality and alignment with design intent.
- Participate in project meetings and activities, offering technical input and maintaining effective communication among all stakeholders.
- Support project readiness for commercial operation, including training, spare parts strategy, maintenance planning, and operating procedure development.
- Manage and coordinate project closeout activities, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, GWO standards, and work order unitization.
- Direct and support capital and O&M budgeting for assets through Commercial Operation Date (COD).
- Ensure adherence to accounting, reporting, procurement, and legal requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Serve as a technical resource for solar and battery energy storage systems, providing guidance and problem-solving support.
- Promote continuous improvement and excellence in project delivery across renewable and resilient generation initiatives.
- Monitor and respond to critical after-hours communications to maintain project continuity and address urgent issues.
- Communicate and report safety concerns or hazards immediately to leadership and ensure all work aligns with Southern Company’s safety values.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
- Advanced degree and/or industry certifications considered a plus
Experience
- Experience in engineering, planning, and/or maintenance experience is required.
- Experience in project management related to engineering, procurement, construction, or startup is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in power generation, utilities, manufacturing, or heavy industry
- Knowledge of power plants or renewable systems
- Familiarity with maintenance or asset management systems (e.g., Maximo or similar)
- Exposure to data analysis, reporting tools, or continuous improvement methodologies
- Leadership experience and the ability to influence cross-functional teams
- Experience executing contracts and coordinating, planning, and budgeting of capital and O&M projects
