Instructional Designer – Training Support Services
WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE
- This position will fill multiple positions in the Birmingham, AL area.
- One (1) position – General Service Complex, Calera, AL supporting Power Delivery Engineering Training
- Multiple positions – APC Headquarters, Birmingham, AL supporting Non-Technical Training

- The team currently has a hybrid work schedule requiring the individual(s) to be in the office four (4) days a week and one (1) day remote . Occasional adjustments may require additional in-office time based on business needs. This is subject to change at any given time at the company’s discretion.
- No relocation assistance will be available.
- Travel would be less than 25%.
POSITION SUMMARY
Join our high-impact Training Support Services organization at Southern Company. Supporting one of the largest energy utility companies in America, you will lead learning initiatives in a highly performing but safety-focused organization.
Collaborate across Southern Company with a variety of internal customers to design and deliver learning interventions that support critical operations and drive performance.
This role enables you to work directly with SMRs to design and develop effective instructional content without the added responsibilities of LMS administration or teaching courses. This is a hands-on, fast-paced environment ideal for someone with corporate instructional design experience who enjoys teamwork, problem-solving, and building practical, learner-centered solutions.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Learning Technologies, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
What we are looking for:
- Proven experience designing and developing learning solutions that address business and operational performance needs in a corporate or enterprise environment.
- Experience using industry standard instructional design and development models and theory.
- Solid understanding of adult learning principles and the application of those principles to create engaging, effective learning experiences.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing needs and developing effective learning interventions in partnership with subject matter experts.
- Hands-on experience with instructional development tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Rise, or similar authoring tools).
- Ability to independently manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability and willingness to work onsite in Birmingham, AL, on a regular basis (not a remote role)
Responsibilities include:
- Engage in curriculum planning and development, training design, and development. Includes specification of learner outcomes (goals and objectives), content specification and design, selection of instructional delivery formats, strategies and media, materials, and ensuring continuity from course to course.
- Execute project plans and adhere to timelines for all learning projects, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Apply instructional design theories, practices, and methods in the design of a variety of instructional materials for instructor-led courses, online modules, web-based learned aides, or other products/learning technologies.
- Ensure online materials comply with system requirements for the various learning technologies used by the operating companies while applying accessibility standards.
- Collaborate with customers, subject matter resources, instructors, and business leaders to develop materials based on information provided.
- Upload and maintain content documentation and course folders in various systems such as SharePoint and Learning Management System (LMS).
- Maintain courses by editing content and publishing updated courses as needed per customer need or governance process.
- Manage projects and meet timelines with minimal supervision.
- Apply various aspects of adult education, including classroom and e-learning technologies related to specific content.
- Initiate, plan, organize, monitor, and report own work and provide leadership to project teams, when appropriate.
- Research and advocate for new innovations in both learning design and education, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
