Position Summary
The Health, Safety, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Specialist is responsible for leading, coordinating, and maintaining emergency response readiness and safety compliance programs across Coastal Generation facilities. This position ensures Emergency Response Teams are properly staffed, trained, equipped, and qualified to respond to medical, fire, confined space, hazardous materials, environmental, and site‑specific emergency events.
This role supports plant operations by strengthening emergency preparedness, supporting safety and health compliance programs, and reinforcing Georgia Power’s safety culture and Our Values . The position works closely with plant leadership, Safety & Health, Compliance, and external emergency response organizations to ensure consistent emergency response capability and regulatory compliance across multiple sites.
Major Job Responsibilities
Emergency Response & Preparedness
- Lead and coordinate Emergency Response Teams (ERT) at assigned Coastal Generation facilities.
- Ensure ERT staffing, qualifications, and proficiency meet plant, system, and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as liaison between plant leadership, external emergency service organizations, and ERT members during drills and emergency events.
- Develop and implement emergency preparedness strategies, drills, and exercises.
- Develop and maintain budget to ensure adequate ERT training, equipment maintenance and supplies
- Maintain emergency response equipment, supplies, and readiness.
- Available for emergency call‑out as required.
Training & Qualification Management
- Develop, schedule, and deliver emergency response training programs, including:
+ Medical First Aid and CPR/AED
+ Confined space entry and rescue
+ Hazardous materials response
+ Spill prevention and firefighting
+ Incident Command System (ICS) training in accordance with NIMS
- Conduct drills, annual skills proficiency checks, and specialized rescue and equipment training.
- Coordinate scenario‑based and hands‑on training with plant leadership, Safety & Health, and external instructors.
- Maintain accurate training records and certifications in compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and Southern Company Generation requirements.
- Qualify and serve as an instructor in applicable emergency response disciplines, as required.
Safety, Health & Compliance Support
- Support implementation and administration of confined space programs, including plan development, annual reviews, rescue support, and atmospheric monitoring.
- Assist with Industrial Hygiene programs, including respiratory protection.
- Perform respirator fit testing for emergency response personnel.
- Support internal reviews, audits, inspections, and emergency readiness assessments.
- Assist with implementation of confined space program requirements including plan development, annual review, rescue support, atmosphere monitor maintenance and training for plant personnel
- Assist compliance teams in developing and implementing policies, procedures, action plans, and training related to safety, health, and regulatory compliance.
- Serve as the Fire Protection Specialist ensuring all compliance requirements are met
Safety Culture & Engagement
- Reinforce Georgia Power’s safety culture through coaching, mentoring, and engagement with ERT members and plant personnel.
- Promote consistent emergency response standards across all Coastal Generation sites.
- Foster cross‑site collaboration and sharing of best practices.
- Serve as a resource for employees, contractors, and new hires participating in safety and emergency response initiatives.
Job Requirements
Education & Experience
- Experience in industrial emergency response, safety, or health programs required.
- Experience in power generation or high‑hazard industrial environments preferred.
- Multi‑site coordination or leadership experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of emergency response disciplines (medical, fire, rescue, hazmat).
- Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and applicable safety and health regulations.
- Knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS) and NIMS.
- Strong leadership, communication, and instructional skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
