Environmental Analyst / Specialist / Engineer
Job Description
This role may be filled as an Environmental Engineer, Analyst, or Specialist depending on educational background, experience, and qualifications.
The position is designed to be based at GA Power Corporate Headquarters @ 241 Ralph McGill Blvd, Atlanta, GA, with an expectation to be* in an office setting or at a customer location four (4) days per week and as additionally required. ---HOWEVER — It can also, possibly, be based ANYWHERE IN GEORGIA (GA)!

The Environmental Analyst / Specialist / Engineer is responsible for developing, communicating, and implementing remediation, emergency response, and waste-related environmental programs, guidelines, and compliance strategies for company business units and facilities.
This position will represent the Company before regulatory agencies, during regulatory inspections, and in interactions with external groups and the public.
The successful candidate will serve as the Point of Contact (POC) and subject matter expert for general program and project management, remediation corrective action strategies, Storm Emergency Restoration Preparation (SERP), emergency spill response, obtaining environmental right of entry permits, compliance training for internal stakeholders, reporting monitoring and data collection results, and performing business unit, facility, and vendor compliance program reviews.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Interpret and ensure adherence to environmental regulations/requirements including the Georgia Solid Waste Management Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Recovery Act (CERCLA), Georgia Hazardous Sites Response Act (HSRA), and Georgia Hazardous Waste Management Act.
- Manage HSRA/VRP/Brownfield investigations and cleanups.
- Support efforts to obtain environmental permits and develop cost-effective compliance strategies and programs for waste and remediation-related regulations and permits, including the creation of Environmental Guidelines and appropriate communications and training.
- Specific responsibilities include vendor audit project/program management, remediation project and corrective action management, groundwater monitoring and sampling, permitting and operations compliance, spill response including clean-up activities, regulatory notifications, and waste disposal, Storm Emergency Response Planning (SERP), and other remediation-related tasks.
- Perform environmental due diligence and desktop evaluations for owned sites and properties under consideration for purchase or sale.
- Manage company owned Underground Storage Tanks (UST), including annual registration, compliance reviews, inspections, closures, site remediation, and agency interactions.
- Monitor environmental legislative and regulatory activities that impact company operations and provide interface and input to Southern Company environmental personnel regarding federal or industry environmental issues.
- Work with regulatory agencies and external groups to promote informed, balanced, and science-based regulations and permit requirements.
- Support and monitor company compliance with various environmental programs through program reviews, making observations and decisions regarding the effectiveness of compliance activities, and reporting to environmental management and business units.
- Collaborate with other Environmental Analysts, Specialists, and Engineers to develop and implement cost-effective solutions and services for mitigating environmental risks.
- Develop partnerships with all levels of business unit and facilities management to implement low-cost and effective environmental programs.
- Support the Company's environmental policies in all areas, including environmental stewardship initiatives.
Job Requirements
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of applicable environmental laws and regulations, specifically HSRA, RCRA, CERCLA, and PCB Management. Related work experience in GA EPD, UST Management Program, HSRA, VRP, and Brownfield management areas is preferred.
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal environmental regulations, and direct experience working with regulatory agencies and regulatory reporting.
- Ability to synthesize technical information and communicate it in a manner suitable for both technical and non-technical personnel.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a flexible schedule, which may include non-traditional hours and travel.
- Judgment skills necessary to make decisions, solve complex problems, and implement solutions.
- Project and contract management experience, including management of third-party service providers.

Educational Requirements
- BS or BA degree in engineering or a science-related field (e.g., geology, chemistry, environmental science).
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in one or more of the following areas is required: environmental compliance and auditing, environmental project management, environmental and groundwater remediation.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience interpreting environmental regulations and interacting with regulators.
- Experience in groundwater sampling and monitoring.
- Working knowledge of Distribution, Transmission, or Generation operations is a plus.
- Experience in waste characterization, transport, and disposal, as well as emergency spill response and clean-up.
- Professional License or Certification in a related area is a plus.

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:
- Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
- Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
