Civil Site Engineer - Transmission Civil Design

WORK LOCATION
- This position will be based out of the Energy Center, Birmingham, AL.
- This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
- Successful candidates are expected to be in the office or at a field location four days per week and can work remotely the remaining day of the week.
- Travel expectations – approximately 25% per year, to include both office and field locations as dictated by business need.
- Some relocation assistance may be available if the successful candidate does not already live within a reasonable commute distance.
JOB SUMMARY
The Engineer in the Civil Engineering Group will be responsible for civil site work design, including preparation of grading, drainage, and erosion control plans. The individual shall have a good understanding of survey data required to perform a land development design. The engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with the civil portion of transmission substation and line projects. This position will also be responsible for tracking project expenditures. The position will require field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required.
- BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
- Professional Engineers (PE) license in the state of Alabama or able to obtain one
Experience:
- Solid experience in grading design, erosion control design, hydrology and storm water design is strongly preferred
- Prior foundation and structure design experience is a plus
- Prior experience in construction estimating and construction administration is a plus
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing civil grading design and construction as it relates to NPDES, and general construction principals
- General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, and obtaining easements
- Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs
- Detailed knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs
- Detailed knowledge of right-of-way clearing, environmental regulations, and crew support activities and associated costs
- Demonstrated ability to design a land development project including site grading, stormwater design, erosion control, permitting, etc. with little to no direct supervision
- Demonstrated ability to understand, evaluate, and estimate civil engineering (grading), initial clearing, environmental, and construction related problems in the field
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply design criteria and government regulations to design and construction drawings
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Hydraflow hydrographs, Interconnected Channel and Pond Routing (ICPR) or similar software for stormwater modeling
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide quality design for transmission substation and line projects, including: grading, structures, substation foundations, transmission line foundations and oil containment to meet schedule and budget requirements
- Provide work direction and oversight for onsite design technicians
- Serve as the civil engineering representative on solution team and site selection committees and prepare preliminary designs as required to support the process
- Apply civil engineering expertise to accurately "scope" projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion
- Identify variances between estimated and actual quantities in order to continuously improve the scoping and estimating process
- Provide input on the development and refinement of civil engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (TEAMS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor durations, and total costs
- Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training. This will require overnight travel within the Southern Company system
