Hydro Licensing Specialist
JOB DESCRIPTION/SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting with the monitoring and managing of Alabama Power hydropower license obligations. These obligations include both ensuring continued license compliance and successfully relicensing Alabama Power’s hydro projects. Areas of responsibility include implementation of various project license requirements and FERC orders, and helping facilitate both internal, as well as agency and stakeholder, consultation processes and developing FERC filings. This position is responsible for establishing strong communication lines with other internal departments and establishes ongoing rapport with FERC staff.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required (in engineering, science or related field, preferred).
Experience (looking for candidates with experience in some or all of the following areas):
- Knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations pertaining to power generation and delivery, and the environment, such as the Federal Power Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and National Historic Preservation Act.
- Working knowledge of hydro projects and hydro operations.
- Prior experience with FERC hydro licensing and/or regulatory/statutory compliance.
- Knowledge of real estate, land/property rights, and/or public recreation.
- Experience interfacing with governmental agencies and external stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong written communication skills are required. The successful candidate must have the ability to synthesize technical/complex information and communicate it, in writing, in a manner suitable for both a technical and non-technical audience.
- Strong oral communication skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and to work constructively with other groups within Southern Company and with outside agencies and stakeholders.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, are required (experience using ArcGIS and SharePoint is a plus).
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple complex issues simultaneously is required.
- Ability to facilitate meetings and make presentations is required.
