Transmission Support Engineer/Technician
Protection Communications Field Support
This posting serves to fill one Engineer/Technician position within the TM&S
(Transmission Maintenance and Support) Organization at Georgia Power Company.

WORK LOCATION
This position will be based from the applicant’s home region, however, candidates
should be willing to travel to work anywhere within the state on an as-needed basis.
JOB SUMMARY
This job posting is for a Test Engineer/Technician - Protection Communications Support
position in the Georgia Power Transmission Maintenance and Support organization.
Reporting location will be closest GPC Transmission Maintenance Center to home location.
The successful candidate will provide field maintenance, project assistance and commissioning
functions for Power Line Carrier and Fiber Optic protection schemes across the Georgia Power
Company territory.
The successful candidate will be responsible for completing associated duties under minimal
supervision, and will follow prescribed procedures to support the maintenance of the transmission
protection systems installed throughout the Georgia Power Territory.
These positions may be filled at a grade level commensurate with the successful candidate’s
experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Create a safe work environment through total personal commitment to putting Safety First.
Become knowledgeable of the processes used at Georgia Power in the planning of capital
projects, upgrades, operation, installation, and maintenance of powerline carrier
equipment, transmission pilot relaying, and fiber optic communications.
Become knowledgeable of the functions and activities of the various internal departments
that are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of transmission protection
communications equipment.
Become knowledgeable of the Protection & Control Field Services work practices and
processes.
Become proficient in the use of all software applications used in the operation and
programming of various relaying and equipment.
Support the development of standard designs and criteria for use on the Southern
Company transmission system.
Support construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations as well
as in emergency restoration of failed equipment.
Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms with
company-provided training. This will require overnight travel within the
Southern Company system.
Primary responsibilities for the position are as follows:
Provide direct support, maintenance, oversight, and technical assistance/expertise on
the operation of the protection communications systems and applications within the Georgia Power
operational territory.
Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, on-site support during
construction, and final stage commissioning.
Coordinate activities and communicate with other project stakeholders and
departments associated with various projects.
Become knowledgeable of the Southern Company TEAMS and STOMP project applications.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program/institution is
recommended. Civil, Electrical or Mechanical engineering degree preferred.
- An Associated degree in Electronics from an accredited institution will be accepted with
previous field experience
Experience:
- At least 4 years transmission protection, substation protection and controls,
or protective relaying experience is required.
- Powerline carrier, pilot relaying and/or fiber optic communications experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of overall transmission substation design, construction, and maintenance
practices, with specific expertise in power substations and power line carrier preferred
- Technical aptitude to solve substation engineering problems related
to control, design, and construction of transmission protection equipment.
- Technical ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
- Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications and to adapt
quickly to specific application software. Previous experience with Windows required.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers,
and other field personnel.
- Time management skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and
competing deadlines.
- Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to satisfactorily complete project
documentation and to function effectively in a team environment.
