External Communications Manager

Job Summary:
The External Communications Manager is responsible for developing and executing strategic communication plans that build, protect and enhance Georgia Power’s brand reputation and increase visibility across every region of the state.
A key function of this role will include managing public relations efforts throughout the state in coordination with infrastructure expansion projects required to serve the state’s growth. The successful candidate will lead a team tasked with developing and delivering the company’s external story to key audiences and through specific owned and earned channels.
This is a strategic leadership role designed to “create clarity and cultivate connections” with direct oversight of external communications efforts involving media relations and social media storytelling.
This leader works with the broader Corporate Affairs leadership team to develop and implement reputation management strategies to effectively convey Georgia Power’s mission, value proposition and initiatives to diverse audiences including 2.8 million homes and businesses and about 7 million Georgians.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in media relations, public relations, or corporate communications, with at least 2 years in a similar leadership or managerial role.
- Proven track record of managing successful media and social media campaigns.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience in reputation management and crisis communication is highly desirable.
- Experience in the energy sector and/or a regulated utility is a plus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive external communication plans and messaging frameworks that support business goals, enhance corporate reputation and effectively convey the company's values and commitments throughout every region of the state.
- Provide strategic leadership for social media strategy, working with a team of content creators to foster relationships for effective storytelling, and manage the development of engaging content that aligns with the company's brand voice and objectives.
- Direct the preparation of media and social media coverage analyses, and prepare reports for company leadership on activities, trends, and public sentiment to inform strategy and response. Monitor public perception and proactively address potential reputation risks through strategic communication initiatives.
- Foster collaboration among multiple internal teams to ensure cohesive consistent messaging across all platforms.
- Identify opportunities for thought leadership and develop content that positions Georgia Power as an industry leader to key audiences.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team of communicators, providing guidance and support to help them achieve communications goals.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment, encouraging professional growth and development.
- Allocate resources effectively and manage team workloads to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of communication initiatives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key media contacts, including journalists, editors, and influencers.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate interviews, press conferences, and media events.
- Oversee the development of press releases, media kits, and other communication materials to support company announcements and initiatives.
