SummaryThe primary duties of the Electrical Engineering Intern are to work with the project team by assisting in the development of construction documents, performing basic electrical design tasks, and learning industry standards and practices. This internship provides hands-on experience for students currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.
Qualification RequirementsElectrical Engineering Intern will be required to work normal business hours (1st shift) at the Durham, NC campus. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and on time. Minimum QualificationsCurrently enrolled in a four-year degree in engineering from an accredited engineering program.Ability to read and interpret documents to include work instructions, written directions, applicable building codes and markups to electrical drawings.Proficient in Adobe and Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel and Outlook.Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to read and communicate in English.Has zero (0) - three (3) years experience with a CAD software package.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of electrical systems and experience with drafting electrical components. Knowledge and understanding of schematic diagrams and other related electrical design. High level of attention to detail and organizational skills.Maintains neat and organized drawings. Adheres to department CAD standards. Ability to read, interpret and apply electrical and building codes.Ability to work independently and stay on task as well as work under supervision.Ability to take ownership of assigned tasks in a timely manner, and learn new principle ideas and concepts. Ability to communicate and discuss issues with peers and leaders.
Essential FunctionsMaintains safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
This position must be able to develop and design electrical construction documents and use CAD software to develop the drawings with speed and accuracy. Drawings include site plans, one-line diagrams, electrical risers and schematics, electrical details, specifications and sequence of operations.
Review, interpret and apply NEC, NFPA, IEEE and all applicable AHJ codes and standards.
Reviews O&M manuals for project close-outs and submittal packages for customer approval.
Assembles and reviews permitting packages including plotting construction drawings, drafting letters, transmittals and having the engineer sign and seal documents as required.
Communication and cooperation with the EPC engineering team members, Project Team members, sales and product engineering groups to ensure quality and accuracy of deliverables and to remain on schedule.
Physical DemandsLimited travel will be required. Less than 1%Must be able to work at a desk and use a computer for extended periods of time.
Work EnvironmentOffice environment.Required to sit at a desk throughout the day with occasionally walking around the campus.
