IT Field Support Group Manager
JOB SUMMARY:
The Group Manager, IT Field Support is responsible for the planning, implementation, operation, and maintenance of technology infrastructure environments within an assigned regional territory. This role serves as the Technology Organization (TO) infrastructure leader to regional leadership and customer groups, ensuring reliable, secure, and efficient technology services that meet service-level expectations.
This position provides leadership over infrastructure supporting compute, transport, data/voice, wireless, and power delivery and transmission networks, including SCADA communication systems. The Group Manager leads strategic planning, budgeting, workforce development, and operational execution while ensuring regulatory compliance, security standards, and business continuity.
This role supports operations across Alabama and Mississippi, serving Alabama Power, Mississippi Power, SouthernLinc, Southern Power, and the Generation Support Team on behalf of Southern Company. The position leads a leader-of-leaders organization, overseeing five supervisors and approximately sixty employees across multiple geographic locations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S., B.A., or B.B.A.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, Business, or a related field preferred.
Experience and Skills
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including building and leading results-driven teams.
- Proven experience in performance management, workforce planning, and budget management.
- Strong understanding of current and emerging technologies and their business impact.
- Broad knowledge of Southern Company’s business operations or equivalent transferable external experience.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technology strategies and initiatives to all levels of leadership, including executives.
- Experience working with unionized environments, particularly International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management capabilities.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and People Management
- Lead, develop, and retain a diverse, highly technical workforce, with a strong focus on performance management, succession planning, and employee development.
- Provide leadership and direction to supervisors and other Technology Organization employees within the region.

- Foster a strong partnership with Alabama Power Labor Relations and the IBEW.
Operational and Strategic Management
- Serve as the primary TO representative for regional infrastructure needs, requirements, and initiatives.
- Partner with business unit leadership and Infrastructure Services to support operational effectiveness, including storm readiness and restoration efforts.
- Represent Field Operations requirements as a member of the Infrastructure Operations management team.
- Establish and maintain strong partnerships with internal teams, business organizations, external vendors, and suppliers.
Technology and Infrastructure Oversight
- Oversee the implementation, operation, and maintenance of regional infrastructure, including:
- Compute systems
- Transport networks
- Data and voice networks
- Wireless networks
- Power Delivery and Transmission SCADA communication systems
- Manage 24x7 operations, including configuration changes, fiber and microwave maintenance, and escalation response.
- Ensure timely resolution of complex technology issues and effective communication with internal customers at all levels.
Compliance, Security, and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, audits, change management controls, and company policies.
- Oversee disaster recovery and business continuity planning and testing within the region.
- Implement network and cybersecurity solutions in alignment with established standards and guidelines.
Financial and Program Management
- Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, including cost forecasting and variance analysis.
- Provide clear and accurate explanations of total costs associated with service delivery.
- Support the growth and sustainability of the Field Operations Telecom Training Program.
- Serve as management sponsor for the Western Safety Advisory Board.
